I have a question, any help will be appreciated. I picked up a 700p in .308 with a 26in barrel for almost nothing. If I had 10in removed and the had it recrowned what kind of performance can I expect? I mean accuracy, velocity, recoil, muzzle blast/flash.

The rifle is very accurate now, I am just looking for something really compact even more so than the LTR, and I guess I am also looking for a new project. Again, any information will be greatly appreciated.

There have been many posts regarding barrel lengths specifically for the Rem 700. For most loads, powder burn will be complete at 18 to 19" making 20" about the shortest you want to go. If you took 10 inches off your 26" barrel I think you will see too much fireworks.:) I have a 20"pss and it's very accurate and much easier to handle than the 26".

oneminute, what about the Robar QR2 folder? I can't remember if it's a 16 or an 18 inch barrel but it's right in there on being short, man a 6 color desert camo QR2 folding stock Robar just makes me drool all over myself. It's a darned nice little gun from what I can tell, don't know if I really trust the M14 mag conversions they offer though and I'd like consider the standard capacity to be enough to get the job done.

Uglygun,
My Robar catalog specs. out the QR2 and QR2-F as having 20" barrels standard. I am sure Robar would do a shorter one on request though. I agree on the M-14 mag conversions. If I want more than 5 rounds of .308 I will use a semi-auto.

I have a PSS in .243 cut to 20" amongst other mods. Stupidly accurate! No noticable flash worth worrying about. If I screw my mod on the end I still have a sensible length gun. Would highly recommend 20". But thats me........I think much shorter, especially in .308 might be a bit drastic, you'l have more forend than barrel!(LOL)

M118 long range 7.62x51 will will work most efficiently in a 25.75 inche barrel, IIRC, acording to a test conducted by the USMC.

The .308 suffers less from chopping barrel length than many other calibers. In terms of percentage you will lose a lot less than you would from an over bore cartridge like a .270, 25-06 or magnum. Flash and roar is a relative thing. if you do not shoot much in low light it will not be that noticeable. I owned a 20" bull barreled .308 that was a reworked Remington Varmit. I was getting 2800 fps from a 150 grain Hornady and around .75 MOA. Not bad for a hunting load. I do not remember ny problems with either noise or flash. You short barreled .308 may be hard to sell if you ever decide to move on. My $.02.
