I have a remington vtr 22-250 with the triangle barrel and three ports on the top. This thing shoots great but it will blow your ear drums out!! I bought it for night hunting coyotes and after one shot you cant hear for 30 mins. I have shot many other 22-250's and the noise doesnt bother me. The ports are what makes it so freakin loud. My question is can i have the ports cut off the barrel and will that affect my accuracy?? Im not going to worry with trying to keep up with ear plugs, to much movement and coyote hunting at night is a lot of suprise shots and not enough time to fumble with plugs.

Night hunting? Odds are that the ranges you'll shoot are such that a .223 would work just as well. Do some trading. :)

Or you could get a gunsmith to weld the holes shut. :D

Have your hearing tested - don't be surprised it's already affected. Otherwise, it really is important to wear hearing protection. Loud noises can and do affect it, I haven't had one person with damaged hearing say it's better. Every one wishes they made a different decision. Most have tinnitus problems. It's not macho to constantly ask "What?" over and over.

Consider a suppressor if your state allows it. Less noise overall means better hunting.

Self inflicted hearing loss wouldn't be the major health problem it is today if the '34 NFA hadn't interfered. The military is gearing up to address it with mandatory suppressor use. Korea already has issued one per soldier. In the long run it significantly cuts heath care costs. As a taxpayer, it's all good.

Don't be even more of a burden on society by continuing the practice of shooting without protection.

My father in law's VTR in 243 is also LOUD!

Since the barrel crown is behind the ports you could definitely have the ported section cut off and have it refinished.

I have a Remington VTR in .204 Ruger. It's loud of course, but I wouldn't characterize that rifle louder than normal for a .204

PS. I freaking love my VTR. Not only is it cool looking but it handles amazingly and (contrary to popular reviews in major gun mags) it's every bit as accurate as I want it to be. Shooting just over 1/2 MOA at 150 yards with my hand loads.

When they first came out with those brakes on such mild recoiling rounds such as the Varminter and 223Rem I had to chuckle.

Just another gimmick to sell to people who don't know any better.

Cut that thing off and learn a lesson:(

There seems to be some confusion on the brake....thats a pic. My vtr is the most accurate gun I have with my reloads...like one hole at 100..not even a ragged hole, and under .75 at 200. Thats why im not considering trading. The point of the ports on the top of the barrel is to reduce barrel rise...which it does, but at the cost of more noise. My 250 is way louder than any plain barrel 250 i've ever shot
