brake & trigger job

Sir:
As I've said countless times - do not put a brake on that gun.
My son had a magnaport done on a Ruger Super Redhawk and it about blew his ears off - even with ear protection it still will cause hearing damage!
Any muzzle-brake must direct gases to the rear to be effective! I don't care what their claims are!
Brakes are more popular now - why? - because shooters want performance but do not want to pay the price for it - recoil.
We are a generation of men with "lace on our pants" as Askins said.
I don't mean that personally but as a general comment.
Get A-Squares book (loading manual, "A-Square loading manual - any shot you want") - that manual will teach you, as it has me, the truth about rifles!
If a cartridge bothers you - get a smaller one - I know this opens a "can of worms" and I'll pay dearly for it but it's time we start really practising riflecraft .
In Africa PH guides will have you remove the brake or go back to the airport - the practice is growing there
I hope no one takes my opinion seriously - I am not trying to demean anyone.

I would comment on what Harry said on only 2 things:
1- A brake only has to vent gases to be effective in reducing recoil, because most of the recoil comes from the gases in the barrel hitting the atmosphere. As long as you vent it into an expansion chamber, upward, or forward, it will reduce recoil a certain amount. However, if you want significant recoil reduction, it is best vented to the side or rear.

2- It seems to me that a lot of people who want to buy skill by buying good equipment, and others are doing a lot of things to rifles because "it looks cool". Not that we didn't do those kinds of things to rifles 10 or 20 years ago, it just didn't seem as prevalent.

That said, I agree with him on everything else in his post. Once you port a rifle, noise increases, sometimes to the point of being dangerous. Once you Magnaport a rifle, there is no taking it off. It will reduce recoil, but not a lot. If recoil bothers you, try a lighter caliber or a heavier gun. All my hunting rifles except one have 24" #4 profile barrels on them. That works better than a brake for recoil reduction.

There is a lot of very good advice here on TFL, and it is offered for free in order to help other shooters.

thanks for your advise i think i will pass on the porting. i did not know it raised the sound level. the recoil is not bad I just thought if I cound reduce it why not!!! I am going to get the trigger lightened this weekend factory is about 9-10 pounds from what i read and i will have it lightened down to 3-4 pounds!
