I recently purchased a remington model 58 sportsman 12 ga. I got it used in decent condition for $150 My first question is, is this a good deal. the second question is, The gun in a 3 shot gas powered auto that has a capacity of 3 shots. is there any way to up the capacity?

Any info is appreciated.

When I was a kid I used a Sportsman 58 in 20 gauge . I had no problems with it and shot a lot of shells through it . I did not see any way to increase the tube capacity . I think you got a good deal for $150 . Good luck , Mike...

I enherited two Sportsman 58s from and uncle.
One 12 and one 20. They both have Polychokes and are good hunting guns. As far as I know you cannot convert the magazines to hold any more sheels. Also the reason these guns were redesigned and dropped from inventory was a tendency for the bolt to slam back hard enough to crack the receiver. I had this happen with the 20 so I had to retire it. Other than that it is a good hunting gun.

Good luck,

The bolt does seem to snap back awefully hard. that has alot to do with the ammo power and the ajustable gas valve on the gun. i try to keep it on high power so it dont snap back so hard. but with the lower power shells it will not autoload on high power setting. Thanks for the info. Ill keep an eye on my frame for cracks ! the gun is a great, fun shooter...Now if i could only hit those darn flying squrrels !
