Hi I am new to the forum I just purchased a remington sp-10. I will be primarily using it for turkey. Just wondering what some of you think about this gun and how they shoot. I have a browning bps 10 ga that I love to shoot and the recoil isn't bad due to the weight. The BPS shoots a good pattern out to around 60 yards. I use winchester #5 2 1/4 ounce turkey loads in the bps.

any info would be appreciated

Thanks for the info. I have a relative who has an ithaca mag 10 nice gun so the sp-10 will be good.

thanks again

I've hunted with folks using both the Ithaca and Remington versions. IF one does the homework, these are excellent waterfowlers.

Homework means practice.Had I one of these, I'd reload some hulls with something like 1 1/8 oz of small shot and go shoot barn pigeons.etc just to acclimate.

No one can use the big 10 well coming from standard shotguns. It takes some time to adjust to the extra weight and inertia.

Brister wrote that using any 10 gauge other than the Ithaca was like being in a car wreck. Either the Mag 10 or SP 10 will turn the recoil mule into a pony and enable us to use the extreme performance advantage well.

If I had a 10 gauge, chances are very good it would be an SP 10.

HTH....

Thanks Dave McC I will definitely practice a lot with the SP-10 before I use it. This gun is definitely different than my bps 10 ga that I use for turkey. I have a good friend who reloads who I will have help me with reloading as I have never reloaded before.

You're very welcome. BP has components for the 10 and some loading data.

FYI, shotshell reloading can seem complicated, but an hour of instruction and slow practice will see you cranking out safe, effective ammo.

I had a Remington SP-10 for a number of years and used it primarily for turkey hunting. It was a great gun and I harvested a number of turkey with it. I only had 1 problem and it was an operator generated problem. While loading up one morning I had a tom gobbling within 40 yards of my set-up. Not wanting to spook the bird, I eased the bolt down when chambering the first round. When the bird came in the gun didn't fire because the bold carrier was not all the way down. Lesson learned, let the bold free fall (don't follow it down) when chambering that first round. The only other issue was the overall weight of the gun. Carrying that gun was a real PITA after a while!!
Recoil was never an issue due to the weight of the gun.
I eventually sold the SP-10 and purchased a Benelli Super Black Eagle.

Thanks BigV. I appreciate all the info and help. I will be going up to shoot the SP-10 in a few weeks when I can get some time to shoot it. I like the look and feel of the gun. I agree it is very heavy but as you said this helps knockdown the felt recoil. Thanks again for your help. I am going to put a good sling on it like the one I have on my BPS 10ga.
