Sitting here watching "America Guns" based on Gunsmoke out in CO.

Guy brings in a Remington 870 shotgun, says he wants them to turn it into a self defense tactical shotgun. It was given to him by his grandfather.

So, the owner tells him he will replace the barrel, give it a tactical stock, and ghost rings and a side saddle shell holder....for....$1700.

OK, let's play the game of:

Name each item of fail in this.

Yes, the customer is a Youth Pastor in the area.

He gave the Gunsmoke owner a very nice scoped hunting rifle, with custom trigger work...that was $400 toward the $1700.

He destroyed his grandpa's 870, paid way too much for a tactical conversion, when he could have just gone out and purchased a Remington Tactical Express.

Well I must have destroyed my 1954 Wingmaster by having the barrel cut down to 19" and installing a heat shield, giving it that look of the Roaring 20's.

All I paid for is the heat shield, gunsmith buddie did the barrel work as a favor.

I'm not one to bad mouth folks much, but... the entire show is a fail.

The nicest thing I can say about "American Guns" is, I hope they're paying those guys a lot of money... to be willing to accept the embarrassment of being displayed as crooks, egotists and clowns within the gun community.

Cheers,
C

Could have bought a nice Benelli semi with same set up, for less, NEW. Anyone willing to spend $1,700 on an old pump for home defense kind of deserves what they get took for. A new 870 Police with action smoothed, side saddle and forend light would still be under $800.

Honestly I like my HD shotguns simple. For most situations I would go with my AR (even with Aimpoint etc way less than that cost). Or just my G23 pistol , both of which have light mounted. When I would use a shotgun I want dead nuts simple. A $300-$500 shotgun does just fine.

You know I have watched the show a little bit and can excuse some of the theatrics since it is for entertainment value. However, I fail to see the reason for the excessive prices they charge for everything on the show. Obviously they do not do this in real life are they most likely would not be competitive enough to maintain a business. I worry it might kind of scare people away from the shooting sports if they think the hardware is really that expensive.

Thats bad..... I bought an old wingmaster at a pawn shop for $139, the bluing was gone and the stock was beat up.

I refinished the gun with alumahyde II, cut down/refinished the stock, added a side saddle and cut the barrel down total investment less than $200. Ghost ring sights on a shotgun are like putting a governor on a Vega.

What Sarge said...^

T'would be boring if the shop told the man, "Better to keep Grandpa's Wingmaster to honor his memory, whilst purchasing this new/used 12 ga police riot shotgun I happen to have on the rack here for only $600/$300 and a case or three of shells..." or... "Heres a factory replacement 18" cylinder choke barrel for $150. You unscrew this, remove that, put this here, replace the screw... good to go."

I mean, who is going to get all riled up about that? No one. This way, with a little heated controversy built in... well, here we are discussing it, aren't we? ;)

Sponsors like that. Drama or comedy needs some conflict or no one will care to watch the resolution, so you build some into the script.

Even thiough all of us internet armchair quarterbacks have our own opinion. It is still great that they have these pro gun shows on the air. So unlike 30 years ago when they were considered taboo.

It you believe what you read, the owner was trained by Jeff Cooper and later banned by him. Google sure does make for some fun reading while I'm waiting on clients to show up.

It's one thing to talk about someone overcharging an agreed price on a firearm mod. It's another when the thread becomes a bashfest.
