I bought my basic plane jane R1 back in Dec. 2011 for $550.00. I have had zero problems with it, and I like the pistol. I shoot my own reloads in it. I doubt I have fired more than one mag of factory ammo thru it. I have put both hollow point and ball ammo with bullet weights varying from 200 gr. to 230 grain without a hiccup.
I did send it back to Remington for their free inspection and cleaning within the first year of ownership under the Platinum plan. They paid all the shipping cost and had the pistol back to me within seven days. The pistol had performed flawless and the only thing they did other than inspect and clean was replace one grip bushing. I was not even aware it needed replacing.
In my view the plane jane R1 has the external appearance of the Military M1911 and the Ruger has more the appearance of the Military M1911A1 other than the chrome finish.
I have never fired the Ruger, but I have handled one. The two pistols have a different feel to them. To me the Ruger felt lighter but the specification weight of the two is almost identical. I think it might be a personal thing as to which one any individual will like the best.
Both pistols are American made (USA). The last I heard the R1 was manufactured in Ilion, NY. I understand Remington is moving a large portion of their operations to Huntsville, Alabama. So, this could change.
I like the looks, feel, accuracy, reliability and fit/function of my simple R1. I know others like the elongated beaver tails and other eye candy on their 1911's. Different strokes for different folks.
