Remington PSS Action screws...40in./lbs. or 65 in./lbs.???

I have a Remington PSS in .308 and have been told by Remington to only tighten action screws to 40 in./lbs. when everyone else tells me that you'll get better accuracy with 65 in./lbs. I haven't tested her out past 50 yds yet so I don't know what kind of groups I'd get at 100 yds. If the results aren't satisfactory I'd like to torque them up to 65 in./lbs. but the factory authorized dealer said the HS Precision stock isn't designed for 65 in./lbs. He said they would pull through and it wouldn't be completely free floating anymore. What do you guys think? Thanks,

This has been brought up before and you will get differing opinions. Personally, I torqued mine to 45in lbs. Some will say to go ahead and set them up to 65. I don't think the stock is problem, but the aluminum triggerguard is. You could possibly crack it. Most of the 65in lbs specs I have seen were from the M40 and M24. Both of these rifles use steel triggerguards. If 45 works, why risk it?

I torqued mine to 65 in/lbs without any problems. Removing the action from the stock isn't something you do very often anyway, so the parts aren't subjected to repeated stressing and unstressing. You WILL have to re-zero every time you do remove the action from the stock.

My personal best group was a 5 shot .192" at 100yd with Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr.

H-S Precision, manufacturer of the stocks in question, recommends 65 in/lbs. That's what I use on my VS, with no problems. Any dealer who told you that the screws would pull through @ 65 inc/lbs and that your barrel wouldn't be free-floated any more probably has an i.q. less than that of an unborn rhinoceros.

I use 65 in./lbs. with a factory triggerguard and factory stock on my PSS. In sniper school this was the recommended weight for all rifles regardless of manufacture.

I use 65 inch pounds on my PSS and LTR. I have heard reports though of the trigger guard holes cracking from excess torque. Probably from a person forgetting it was INCHpounds.

Smallest group with .308 PSS was .3". With .223 LTR .3 also. That is center to center.
