Remington Police model 700

Just got back from the gunshow with a new Remington Mod 700 police cal .308, would like some suggestions as to a good scope, rings ect. I will be doing some coyote and groundhog hunting and enjoying the challenge of long range shooting. I need to keep my costs within reason but I recognise that a cheap scope would be stupid. Can someone give me a little help?

I have a 6.5-20x AO Leupold VX III with the target dot rectical and target knobs on my PSS. It is sweet.

My wife is quite happy with the Springfield 6-20 by 56mm she has on her PSS in .300 Win mag.

Good rings and mounts and optics are not cheap. But some are better than others. As for mounts, Badger Ord. and the IBA mount fit the bill nicely.
My two cents goes towards Leupold, Vari X III, 3.5x10 to 8.5x20 (?), and the long range models. Go for target turrets.
A good bipod if that is your choice, sandbag or rest, perhaps a shooting glove.
Try Sinclair Intl for cleaning equipment.

As with Fed168, mine has the Iron Brigade rings and Picatinny Rail base with Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10X40LR M3 (30mm Long range side focus). Butler Creek lenscaps, and a Killflash for bright days. Turner Sling and Harris swivel bipod the 9-13" model.

My 1/50 of a dollar.

I have a Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20x50mm Long Range Target on my Rem 700 VS. It is great for everything. I have shot pigs, coyotes, and squirrels with it. I have used it for shooting 800, 900, and 1000 yard matches. I would just suggest spending the extra money and getting a tapered scope base that adds 20-30 MOA to the scope. I don't have one and must hold over at 900 and 1000 yards and that sort of sucks. Anyone have any recommendations for tapered bases that add MOA?

Just save up your money and get the best. Anything less is a waste of that fine firearm's capabilities.

It's Remington company policy, the 700PSS and 700LTR are offered only to law enforcement and government agencies, not the general public. Doesn't mean the public cannot own or purchase them, just that Remington doesn't advertise them on the website, and sells them only through distributors with law enforcement sales credentials. But there's plenty of those distributors who sell them to the public, no sweat.

(Or at least, there used to be, I don't know if it's the rifle's popularity or a short supply, but read back through some of the archives here to see the discussions on availability)

I bought my .308 700PSS in 1998, and it's worth the cost.

Now, about that 700PSS in .300 Remington Ultra Mag, I'm assuming law enforcement agencies mentioned a defined need for cleaving Brinks trucks in half at typical law enforcement target engagement ranges, and Big Green took them up on the offer...

I've got a 6.5-20x40 VARI-XIII pearched upon my Sendero in a 300win and really enjoy it. The best prices I've found online are at dnrsports.com.

I have the pss in 300 UM, with a leupold variXIII 3.5-10X on leupold mounts. It works fine for me (shoots <.75"@100 yds. with the factory swift scirrocco's).

The scope isn't cheap (it was more than the gun), but I'll never need another.

long throat

Just got a chance to shoot my 308 700 PSS after having the barrel set back and rechambered. Now it seems to be holding a consistent .5 moa with match ammo. Prior to rechambering it would only do about 1 moa unless handloaded too long to fit in the mag well.

answers for posters

On the left hand models, NOT available, on the tapered base...........www.premierreticles.com....get a ONE piece Badger, has 20 moa slope..........as good as it gets...........$ 118.00, until Feb 1st, then $124.00............
On the scope, 6.5x20x50mmxLRT 30mm tube, side focus............use at 1K, and don't need a spotiing scope for steel targets............great combo.........(:@)

I have a 3.5 x 10 x 40 Vari-X III on my Remington 700. I really like it.

Some pointers:

-Get the scope mounted by a gunsmith who knows how to lap and true the rings and has done it before. Many attach points on rifle receivers are NOT drilled "true". Also, many scope rings after installation aren't very linear so the lapping job helps the scope sit with less torque on its tube.

-A good riflesmith should be aware of quality scope rings to install. He's seen 20 times more good/bad rings than you or I have.

-I personally like the 40mm setup because it's a good tradeoff between size and clarity. I once tried a 50mm Leupold Vari-X III and couldn't get used to the huge size. Some people use them quite well, though.

-Where I live my shot at a deer or (ahem) other potential targets may be less than 100 yards easily. For that purpose I like the ability to turn down to 3.5 power. The 6.5 x 20 Leupolds IMHO make it more difficult to find the target when it's 40 yards away. If you're shooting long range, I'd look at the 4.5x14 or 6.5x20.

-I also had a riflesmith cut back my chamber and recrown my barrel, among other things. I don't know what helps the most but my Remington 700 barrel now shoots VERY tight groups if I'm up to the task. Once again, if you have this done, it should be by a 'smith who has done it before.

Hope that helps.
