I have a Rem. Mohawk 48 semi-auto. Have had it for 25 years and dont know how old it was when I got it. Can that be equipped with short barrel for home defense? Haven't gotten to a gun shop with that question yet. Anyone know??

forerunner to 1100

The model 48 Mohawk and Model 58 sportsman were Remington's semi auto offerings prior to coming out with the 1100 in the early 60's. (There was another model, the 878, but I'm not sure when it was introduced). I beilieve they use an spring recoil system vice a gas operated one. Gunsamerica.com may have barrels listed for it. Also, Numrich Arms may have barrels available.

You can check on Remington's website to see the exact dates of manufacture for the Mohawk. It is under their history section.

oops

Sorry - got a little confused. I went to the Remington site (Library). The model 58 is gas operated. The 48 was a three shot version of the recoil operated 11-48.

I have a Sportsman 48 in 16ga. The Mohawk is the same gun. They quit making them in 1963. Barrels can be had, I've lost all on my links to the companies. Run a search on Google. I belive on of the companies was Nurich Gun Parts, I don't know if I spelled Nurich right, but its something like that.
If all else fails you can cut it off. You'll lost velocity but up close it's not going to matter.
