Just acguired a Model 8A in 35 rem. This is another of Mr. John Brownings' designs.

Does anyone know any websites about this firearm?

Can parts still be had?

Where can I get a disassembly diagram?

The rifle is about 50 pecent in the bluing, with a good bore. The wood is good with no cracks.

Any information on this rifle would be appeciated.

Thanks

Judge, I believe Gun Parts Corporation still lists parts for the Remington Model 8. As for an assembly/disassembly diagram you may want to post your request in Harley Nolden's forum. Hope this helps!

Judge, email me, I have two Model 8's and one Model 81, and can scan or mail you a diagram if you'd like. Wonderful rifle, classic Browning, and a real kick in the pants to shoot, especially when folks around are too young to remember what they were.

I have a model 8 with a fairly rare 15 round detachable magazine which is serialized to match the gun. Used by the U.S. Border Patrol....I picked up the gun in San Antonio, but it came from a dealer in El Paso.

Hey another Model 8 owner. I reassembled my great grandfather's old Model 8 a few months back. It's still sitting at my dad's place waiting to be headspaced and inspected. I'm still short a firing pin spring and firing pin buffer spring, and as I don't care much for slam-fires I haven't fired it yet! The NRA used to print (and may still) a book that listed dissasembly procedures for this and the model 81. I believe it was called "Modern Firearms Dissasembly".Check their website and see if it's available. Gun Parts in NY is still the only place I've been able to find parts. Very difficult to track these down at gun shows. Keep us updated!

Poodleshooter, make certain that your Model 8 is configured for the firing pin rebound spring before you try to install one. The gun in the pic (4-digit serial number)was never built with one, nor does it have the leaf-style magazine guide springs seen straddling either side of the box magazine on later examples. But I have indeed had a slamfire with my Model 8, due to my own lack of knowledge concerning autoloaders with free-floating firing pins, and stripping rounds out of the magazine, vs. hand-chambering...

I thought that was more of a Model 8 vs. Model 81 discrepancy (the free floating firing pin issue that is). Can you recommend any good online data on the old Model 8's??

Short of that gentleman's book on the 8 and 81, I don't know where the production change happened. Same deal with the magazine guide leaf springs. Judge Blackhawk told me his 6-digit serial number Model 8 has just one guide leaf spring, not two, nor was his receiver relieved for a second spring. I would imagine perhaps the best source of info would be the Remington factory historian. Remington did a lot of changes in their models through the years, I noticed that when restoring my vintage Model 11 shotgun, too. (Squareback firing pin, recoil buffer washer, etc.)

How does one tell if you have a rebounding firing pin? I know that is a silly question but it seems kinda important to me.

The firing pin on the 8A works great, however as I told Gewehr98 the rifle will fire but will not cycle. The barrel comes back about 1 inch and the bolt stops there, it seems like it is binding. I have now thanks to a great guy the dissembly instructions, so we shall see if this problem can be remedied.

Again, to the firing pin is there any quick way of telling which firing pin the rifle has, it is a 6XXXXX serial number

Thanks and God bless you all.

Judge, you'll know when you get the bolt out, that's the easiest way to tell. If it has the rebound spring, it'll snap back out if you press the firing pin forward and release it, because there's a spring in the firing pin channel that purposely forces the firing pin's tip away from the bolt face unless purposely struck by the hammer.
