Remington model 742

My question concerns what Remington refers to as the fire control assembly of a model 742. Is the main body component, i.e. trigger guard, steel or aluminum alloy ? I am asking because I'm wondering if it can be blued as steel can or needs something special to refinish alloy components.
Thanks very much.

A small magnet, touched to the TG bow away from the trigger should resolve your question, as aluminum alloys are not magnetic.

Try a small amount of cold blue on the part. Chances are if it takes the cold blue it will hot blue (assuming no parts are soft soldered on.)

All the ones I have ever worked with, are aluminum alloy. Blueing won't take but Bichwood Casey makes a product called Aluma-Black. Mine is a small pen type applicator. However, I don't know how this will fit into your plans. Otherwise, I'd go with cerama-coat type coating or even some epoxy paint. ...
