Remington M1917 Rifle Barrel date vs. Serial Number...

Hey Yall... I just purchased a pretty nice Remington M1917 rifle and was curious about the Date of Manufacture. Actually the barrel vs. the receiver DOM. The rifle and blueing appears to be original as far as those components and every little part I've seen a mark on all have an "R". The serial number on the rifle is 281XXX which puts it DOM at June of 1918. However, the barrel is marked 3-18. Does this mean the barrel just hung around Remington for 3 months before they used it? Or was an older barrel put on the rifle later for some reason? I know in at least some Military firearms that as long as the barrel and receiver are close in "Month" and the finish appears to have the same wear, they're almost certainly correct. Just wondering if the same holds true on the 1917...

Thanks in advance!
John

PS: I haven't taken posession of the rifle yet... Only seen pictures. I'll post pics when I do if that's necessary to answer this question.

My US Model 1917 Remington has a s/n very close to yours and also wears a 3/18 barrel with very good rifeling. The rifle is all original and is blued not parkerised as the re-furbs were.. As for the mfgr date I would stick with the S/N chart dates. Mine looks to be assembled 4/18. I also own a very nice Remington 03-A3. The Model 1917 will out shoot the 03-A3 at the 100 yard mark every time. Be happy and enjoy your new rifle and keep it nice as it will only gain in value. A medium shape matching parts original 1917 will pull an easy $625 now days.

I appreciate the info. I'll get some pics posted as soon as I take possession. Can't wait to get her out to the range to see how she shoots!

Yes sir it is .30/06 as original. But since it carries a very strong receiver it has been re-chambered & rebareled out to many calibers. I know of one that was re-holed to .300 win mag and is very accurate. BUT it is a shame to wreck a historical rifle. An intact mil-surp rifle that is not total crapola will always be worth more than one that "Bubba" has worked his "magic" on.
