remington caliber conversion

Well, you can't ream the hole smaller. Changing from .308 to .243 would be straighforward for a gunsmith with a new barrel, though.

358

Dear Sir:
METE sure hit the nail on the head when he mentioned the 358 Winchester. Years ago I built one for a friend and since then I did a 45 for Tim Gardener of Douglas bbls. and he asked me what I owed him - I said, "make me a bbl." What caliber? A 358 Winchester.
That is about the best caliber for woods hunting I know of and mine is a No. 3 taper and is a real gun. If range isn't too far it can take any North American game.
Great choice METE!

I suspect that Mr. Boon really doesn't understand what is involved. As Jim says, you can't ream smaller, but reaming a .308 barrel out to .35 caliber and rerifling it is an expensive proposition and it is pretty hard to find someone to do it. If the gun owner wants to go to another caliber, it would probably be more feasible to just rebarrel or trade the rifle in on one in the caliber wanted.

Harry and Mete,

Several people I know are toying with the idea of reaming and re-rifling a barrel (high power, not a liner). From your responses, it appears you do that work all the time. Can I get an idea of the cost involved and a ballpark turnaround time?

Jim

Years ago I read about PO Ackley reaming out bores and re-rifling them. It can be done, and was done quite a bit during and immediately after WW2 becasue of the lack of good steel blanks, but it is a lot cheaper and more feasible to just buy a new barrel and rechamber it.

Sirs:
I'm sorry - I didn't mean to rebore the bbl - I was thinking as to re-barreling. Douglas makes bbls. Yes, P.O. is gone and it would be cheaper to have the rifle re-barreled. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

The Delta Gun Shop took over Cliff LaBounty's reboring equipment and practice. For a rebore with new neck, like a .308 to .358, they charge $295; a rebore with new chamber, .22-250 to .338 Fed, $340.

I have not dealt with them and do not know anything about them except what I read on their site. Hamilton Bowen uses them (He previously used LaBounty.) which should be an indication of quality.

Hi, Dan'l,

Could you expand a bit on "save this rifle"? Your original question didn't mention any problem, only that you wanted to change caliber.

Jim

Save the rifle? You should just put another 308 barrel on it.

Standard Rem contours are available "pre chambered" so that the smith has little work to do in setting the headspace. Makes a fairly inexpensive job of it.
