Remington ball detent barrel with internal ratchet receiver?

Will the ball detent on an old Wingmaster barrel interfere with the internal ratcheting system on the Express magazine tube and cap? I would imagine that the ball would depress back into the hole as the Express cap gets tightened down.
 
Yes, if the ball you are talking about is acutally what Remington calls a "magazine cap detent" like the one seen here http://www.remingtoncountrystore.co...ber=3&catalogid=1&categoryid=3566&topcat=1038

You will see that it isn't a true ball but the end is rounded off.

If so, think it will work as you expect. I have an express that came with an older stlye 18.5" barrel that has a detent and I sometimes use a mag cap that is desighed for the new no-detent express barrels and it works. However, and this may not be necessary if you keep checking and tightening the cap, I found it best to use a wave washer sold by Brownells at $6 for 3 with it to keep the cap from losening.

(I don't have an old style mag cap with keyways for the detent ball as mine came with an extended magazine. The one I have came with a used new style 28: express barrel I picked up.)

You could probably just go on ebay and buy a Wingmaster cap with the X on the end for a few bucks and save yourself the hassle of having the barrel loosen. I've had that happen on me before when using an express barrel on a wingmaster and it's a bit of a :eek: when your barrel practically falls off on recoil!
 
That would be too easy. The thing is with the newer style express barrels is they don't have the detent. Spome barrel guide rings are drilled for one and some aren't even drilled. Then to set the detent properly you need a $20 tool to ever so slightly peen the edge of the hole over and retain the detent and detent spring. It was easier to get the wave washer.
 
I think you've got me confused. If you are trying to use a barrel with a ball detent, then you'd just need to get an old style mag cap (and spring retainer) so that it won't loosen or fall off on recoil.

If you've got a newer Express barrel without a detent, then no, it won't work without the internal ratchet system. I just pointed out my own opposite case because the outcome of the barrel loosening is the same.
 
Sorry if I confused things as I will. The short answer is the new express mag cap will work with the old detent barrels, but not as good as it could since it will tend to get lose since it will not ratchet. The EZ solution is to use a wave washer if you want to use a recent Express magazine cap. I don't understand why you even ask about the tube unless you mean a magazine extension.

As it was explained to me, the spring retainer isn't really necessary and is there to keep the spring from popping up when the cap is removed.

If it helps to understand what I mean. Attached is a picure of the old style Express barrel, which does have a detent, and the collar for a mag extension on which you can see the keyways for the detent to ride in.

Perhaps the Wingmaster barrels are different.

Screwing the cap down on an O-ring will allow for very secure tightening. Take your mag cap to the hardware store and match. It works great.
 
Yep. Nogo nailed it. Cheap, simple, effective. No machining, no filing, no peening, no need for a different cap. Works real good, lasts a long time.
