Remington 870

Being a huge fan and owner of the 870 I recommended one to a friend. He bought a used 870 Express synthetic version. He has recently said he was having a problem with the 2nd shell popping back out after it was loaded into the magazine. It would seem to me that either there was still a magazine plug in there which he said there wasn't, or it was modified with different parts being as it was used. If anybody has any ideas as to why this second shell would be popping out let em fly.
Thanks in advance.

This is almost always one of two causes.

1. The shooter is simply failing to insure the shells are pushed all the way into the magazine so they are held by the shell stops.

2. There may be a problem with the shell stops.
Either they are impacted underneath with crud and old lube, or the stops are actually bent, not properly staked in place, or otherwise defective.

First step is to make SURE the shells are being pushed all the way into the magazine.

Second step is to disassemble the gun and check the stops.
They should be immovably staked in place, and should have sufficient spring tension when pressed toward the receiver walls.

If the gun looks fouled, get some "gun scrubber" spray cleaner/degreaser and give the back side of the stops a GOOD blasting out.
Dry thoroughly, then give them a good spray with Rem-Oil to re-lube.

If the shell releases aren't staked in place or seem to not be functioning properly, send the gun in to the factory for repairs.
Re-staking the releases requires a special staking tool.

Dfariswheel thanks

Thanks for the info, I will pass it along to him.
That's the reason why I subscribed to this forum, the almost limitless knowledge of it's members.

Its really important to cram the last round into the mag AS FAR as possible into the mag. The jam that results from a round popping past the shell stop will do a great job of tying the gun up.

My suggestion is that your friend "stooge" his reloads. Always grab rounds two at a time. Always push a round into the mag with another round, to make sure youre well past the shell stop.

This probem can also be mechanical, as DFariswheel mentioned. Shell stops that were no longer staked in place were a fairly common deal with the 120+ 870's we would test fire for the local PD yearly. Make sure the smith that does the restaking has the appropriate staking tool.
