Remington 870 ShurShot shooting 3" Shells?

I'm sorry I know this gets asked a lot. I always see "if the receiver has a M suffix it can shoot 3" shells"

It is a Remington "ShurShot" with a 26" barrel and remington 870 receiver.

The Receiver is stamped "RS#####D" and the barrel says "***12 GA. 2 3/4" and 3"*** 3 1/2" Only with Super Magnum Receiver"

It seems like the barrel is good to go for 3" shells but I am not sure about the receiver?

I would call Remington. tell them what you have, give them the serial number, and ask if the receiver is a Magnum. My understanding is that NOT all magum receivers have an M in their serial number. Some of the earlier ones did not, if I correctly recall, but I may be confusing this with the P in early police models.

Thanks KlawMan. They aren't going to take calls until Monday, so I guess I will have to shoot 2 3/4" shells tomorrow duck hunting.

I'm tired and I probably mistook the meaning of your post so I edited what I first wrote. I am sorry I didn't have the easy answer for you.

While Remington says there should be an M in a serial number to denote a magnum receiver, my one year old 870 doesn't have one. It is numbered RS*****C and it has a magnum receiver.

How can I tell if my 870 shotgun has a magnum receiver?




If your 870 serial number ends with "M" you have a 12-gauge Magnum receiver that is capable of shooting 2 3/4-inch and 3-inch shells as long as your barrel is chambered for 3" shells

If your serial number ends with "A", you have a 12-gauge Super Magnum receiver that is capable of shooting 2 3/4-inch, 3-inch and 3 1/2-inch shells with a barrel that is chambered for 3 1/2" shells.

If your serial number ends in "N" or "U", you have a 20-gauge Magnum receiver that is capable of shooting 3-inch shells with the correct barrel.

The barrel and receiver design determines what can be shot from the Model 870. All barrels are clearly marked with chamber information located about half way down on the left-hand side, "side opposite ejection port". Receivers are marked with letters at the end of the serial number that determine ejection size.

These answers are over a year and a half out of date.

Have you tried unloading a 3" hull, including the primer, and hand feeding it into the chamber. Close the chamber and see if it ejects. You have to do this with a hull that has its crimp fully open.
