Remington 870 Security

Found a good deal at the local shop on an 870 Rem yesterday. The only concern I have is that it has the magazine extention already installed, and it looks as though it barely hangs out past the end of the barrel. Say maybe a half inch or so. I looked at the Remington webpage and saw that some of their shotguns have this feature. My question is, is that safe to have the end of your magazine extention out past the barrel like that? Is there anything I should be prepared for before buying a weapon like this?

No sweat. I have factory +3 extensions on all my 20" barrel'd 870's (and my 1100) and they all extend past the barrel a skosh. When you clean the gun, you'll want to clean the powder from the end of the extension but it will not hurt anything. In fact, I like the little bit of prtection afforded by the extension in case of unintentional "grounding".
For the record, mine extend about 7/16" past the muzzle.

The slight protrusion was so the factory extended guns could be fitted with a bayonet.

The original design of the factory extension was for a military project, and they wanted the ability to install a bayonet.

The protrusion is designed to accept the mounting ring on the M-14 rifle bayonet.

Years ago, Remington sold a barrel clamp with an attached bayonet locking lug.

The groove in the magazine extension is to properly position the clamp with the lug.

Since the protrusion on the extension is solid, shooting does no harm.

Thats interesting about the bayonet lug...its also a good point about unintentionally grounding the muzzle.

Interestingly, I was round at my gunsmiths last night and he had a nice Browning 2 shot semi auto (A2?) which had been used in a suicide. Nasty. Anyway, there was a distinct flaring at the muzzle caused by barrel to head contact. :(
