Remington 870 questions

Hi all. New member here from West Virginia. I'm considering purchasing a 20+ year old Rem 870 Wingmaster. I'm wondering if the year of manuf. can be determined from the serial #.
I'm also wondering if parts / barrels are all interchangeable from newer guns to older ones. If I buy one of the new barrels available today, will it be sure to fit on an older gun?
Any info appreciated.

Since barrels can be swapped so easily on 870s, I wouldn't count on barrel codes for a reliable date. There's no published list of serial numbers I know of that is publicly available, it's necessary to call Remington to get a 'born-on' date. 1-800-243-9700 during business hours in NC...
