Taking a shot in the dark here. Looking at a nice used shotgun at a local gun shop. The tag says it's a Remington 870 20 ga "skeet" with 25.5 in barrel. But it has very a nicely grained walnut stock with nice checkering/scroll work and checkered forearm (and recoil pad). Appears to have been well taken care of. I asked the guy if it was a Wingmaster (or whatever), and he said it was just an 870 as far as he knew. Can't find anything exactly like it in my "Standard Catalog of Firearms" except the Model 870 Field Wingmaster, which is as closed as I can get. He wants $350 (down from $400) for the gun. Have to admit I'm not exactly an expert when it comes to shotguns, but this one seems too be a nice gun for the price. Any ideas what we may have here?

Depending on year it sounds like your describing the wingmaster classic as they are the only 870 made that has engraving done to them in the current year, however they are new and I doubt you would be getting one of them for 350 bucks. They did used to make a gun though called a Remington 870 skeet back in the day. Those guns to are worth a pretty penny, honeslty those are the only 870s that come to mind when you say they are engraved.
Oops, went back and read again and I see you said the stock was scrolled off nicely. In that case your probably looking at a mid 90s or so wingmaster or possibly just a sharpened up 870 express but they usually arnt walnut

I'm almost certain it would be a Wingmaster. That should be listed as a 26" barrel. For some reason Remington shotguns are almost always either 1/2" shorter or 1/2" longer than listed in the catalog.
Most Wingmasters will have the name stamped on the receiver, but for a few years they did make them without the name stamped on them. Most are also plain metal on the sides of the receiver, but once again they made them for a few years with some "engraving" on the sides of the receiver like the 1100's have always had.

Hell. I would buy it if it was out here in Cali. One thing that I doubt makes a difference. The one in the link is 12 gauge and he is looking at a 20.
