Remington 870 Police Magnum spring retainer trouble

Hello, I was recently diassembling my 870 Police Magnum after a good day of shooting, and I was having a lot of trouble with the spring retainer.

After I unscrewed the magazine cap, I took a screwdriver to try and remove the spring retainer but I spent so long messing with it because I was afraid of scratching and bending it. It was such a pain to get out but even worse to get it back in!

I'm wondering is there some kind of aftermarket replacement for this that will make it easier to get in and out? Or is there some kind of tool that will help?

There is no other replacement, but Brownell's does sell a tool to make it easier to get out, and another to get it in.
This might be money not well-spent, since there's no need to remove the spring very often.

Remember, when installing the spring retainer, the open, CUPPED end goes in first.

Thanks. Yea I came across that first tool when I searched at Brownells. Personally I feel it would money not well spent.

The main reason I removed the spring was to clean inside the tube, as there was fouling. But is this not necessary to do every time you shoot?
 
Personally I feel it's a pretty unnecessary part and I usually just remove it once and throw it in the unused parts box.
 
How often to clean out the magazine depends on the conditions under which you use it, and how fouled the magazine gets.
If you use it in wet conditions, the spring and inside of the tube can rust.

In "most" cases, once a year is plenty.
Most people don't know the assembly even needs cleaning, so they NEVER get cleaned.

Yes I have been reading this as well. People say it is completely safe to operate without it, but the magazine cap will have some tendency to come unscrewed?

I live in Southern California, so it's a very dry climate. When I cleaned it, this was after it was shot for the first time, it was pretty heavily fouled. Not sure why, could be the ammo I was shooting. Fairly old and maybe a bit dirty.
 
If you discard the magazine spring retainer, every time you remove the barrel, the spring is going to shoot out of the magazine.
Since you will want to clean the barrel much more often then the magazine, and removing the barrel makes the gun easier to transport, this will be a major pain.

Police guns are often coated with a preservative to prevent rust during shipping, and this can cause dirty ammo to crud up the magazine.

Once it's clean, it tends to not need cleaning all that often.
I'd leave the retainer in place. Since you won't need to remove it very often, it won't really be that much of a problem.
It will be much less a problem than having to stuff the spring back in every time you remove the barrel, and every time the spring comes out, it and the inside of the magazine will get lint and stray crud on it.
