Remington 870 Police, Barrel Length Question

I have heard on another gun forum that remington is releasing a limited edition run of remington 870 polices with wood furniture and 18 inch barrels.

I am leary of buying any shotgun with an 18 in barrel, (18.5 not so much). I understand anything under 18 is illegal, and having been a metal worker before, there are such things as tolerances, (and ATF tapemeasures can always be off as well.

Does anyone else feel uncomfortable with an 18 in barrel from the manufacturer, or does someone own an 18 inch barrel and can attest to it being 18 inches?

Personally I wouldn't feel uncomfortable as long as I bought it NIB from a dealer. First thing is I wouldn't give the ATF a reason to A) be standing next to me asking me questions and B) measure my shotgun barrel.

Just make sure you measure it with the action closed and a dowel rod down the barrel.

I hate to say it this way, but you're kidding, right? I have absolutely no questions about buying an 18" shotgun or a 16" rifle, and I don't think you should, either, at least from the factory. I might feel differently buying a cut-down barrel from an individual, but I have no worries about a factory firearm being too short.

Since 1950 the Remington 870 18" barrel was exactly 18".
It was only a couple of years ago that they went to an 18 1/2" barrel and that was mostly so the standard magazine extension would end even with the barrel and stop the complaints about the extension cap sticking out past the muzzle.
The reason the extension stuck out beyond the barrel was so the cap could be used to mount a bayonet.
This didn't work out very well, but Remington never saw fit to change the extension.

Since it's a factory barrel, you'll get no trouble about it.
