Remington 870, magazine extensions, and Brownell's.

Alright, I've got a somewhat stupid question for my first post here. I went onto Brownell's website, looking for some toys for my soon-to-be aquired Remington 870 Express. Happened upon the magazine extensions and said "oooh, hey, more time between reloads!". Well, I wanted to get Remington brand, and I look for find that they're a) limited to three addtional rounds, and b) limited to LEO's... But I can get a FIVE round extender from Choate less money then the REmington three round extension, and it's not restricted to LEO's. What gives?!

Also, has anyone used one of these extenders? I know I don't /need/ one, but higher capacity is almost always good in my book, and I'm a big guy, so the extra weight of the tube and five more shells isn't an issue.

Thanks!

Aaron

Aaron, I'm a big guy too. The long extensions are a bit much, even for big guys. IMO, the two shot extension's the best compromise.

One of the extensions here is a Choate. No probs to report...

I have the 2 shot extender(Choate) on my 870 equipped with the 18in riot barrel. Also have a leather cuff that holds 7 rds mounted on the buttstock. Between the two the shotgun balances nicely and isn't too heavy. I think that a 4 or 6 shot extender would REALLY mess up the balance on the shotgun.

BTW, Choate makes an excellent product.

Here's the misunderstanding.
Different places advertise and describe the extension in different ways.

Magazine extensions are described as 3 shot, 8 shot and for 20" barrels.
The problem is: These are all the SAME extension.
The extension IT'SELF holds an extra 3 shots....

OR, it allows the GUN to hold a TOTAL of 8 shots, (7 in the magazine 1 in the tube)........

OR, this extension will not project past a 20" barrel.

All this is confusing. The best way to clear this up, is to buy the extension based on your gun's barrel length.
A 18" gun will take a 2 shot, or 7 shot extension.
A 20" barrel will take a 3 shot or 8 shot extension.
Both depending on HOW the seller is describing them.

Remington extensions are expensive and hard to come by, but can be found here and there.

However, the Choate is as good, and stands up very well.
As an added bonus, the Choate comes as a COMPLETE kit, containing the extension, the longer spring, a better magazine follower, AND the barrel clamp. They also come in blued or parkerized steel.

ALWAYS use the clamp.
No matter how sturdy the extension is, it's still screwed to the relatively thin magazine tube, which is further weakened by the coarse threads in the end.
Give an extension a bump, and it can and WILL be knocked crooked or OFF THE GUN.

This is exciting, as the extension is blown for a fair distance, the spring shoots away, and shells are scattered around. Of course, the gun is also out of service.

If the extension you buy doesn't come with an clamp, buy one.
Again, it doesn't matter HOW strong the extension is, it can still be knocked off.

If you MUST have a Remington extension, watch Ebay, or just shop around The Gun List and Shotgun News.

For a discount "deal" on Choate, this man sells the cheapest Choate products around. I've bought from him, and he's good:

His prices are cheaper than Brownell's or any other's.

Don't know if this will help, but here's my 870 with the Vang Comp 2-shot extension. The barrel is 20" with rifle sights.
