Remington 870 for $189

I am no expert, but I have considerable experience with Remington 870's. My take is that it is a no nonsense, virtually indestructable, will handle just about any type of ammunition tool. For $189.00 I doubt that you can do any better. I found the same deal, and have been considering getting a third 870 just because the price is too good to pass up. BTW, I have an 870 Wingmaster in 20 ga. that I use for hunting and an 870 Express with Knoxx Spec Ops stock, 20" rifle sighted barrel and sling. The third 870 would be kept around the house with the 18" barrel that I removed from the original express, and changed to the 24" barrel with choke tubes for hunting. Changing out the barrels is about a 3 minute job. Another plus is that just about anything you can think of in the way of accessories is available for the 870.

The Academy Sports chain here in Houston has the 870 on sale for $189. That price includes the $30 Remington rebate.

When you compare the remington 870 and browning bps...are you talking a wingmaster remington or express. The wingmaster and BPS are comparable in terms of qulaity. The browning is a little more complex and has bottom eject. The wingmaster is an easier design to work on and has a ton of aftermarket parts. I have one of each and use wingmaster mostly for hunting and the BPS for trap and misc. clay shoots (It patterns a little better for that). Anyway, the BPS will be finished much better than the express, although with a wingmaster it is 6 to one, half a dozen the other.
The rem 870 express is a "low end" shotgun - not to be confused with the legendary Rem 870 Wingmaster. The 870 express is equivalent with the lower end pumps from Mossberg, etc.
The Browning BPS is a much higher grade shotgun - and retails for about
$ 450 usually although list is about $ 525 I think on the BPS.
In terms of durability I would rank the BPS right up there with the old Wingmaster 870's. It's a very nice pump gun. Remember some of the cost is in the components - the quality of the receiver, the steel in the bolt, firing pin - stuff you can't really see. It's not just the type of wood / finish that determines the cost.
Benelli also makes some very good shotguns - both pumps and semi-autos.

The 870 express is not the equivilent of a Mossberg, It's in some regard betteras it's an 870 that has had a (fair) number of comprimises made to meet a price point. That said it's a reliable, strong design with a steel reciver that if one wanted to could easily be made into a wingmaster or whatever with a few parts and some work.
That can not be said of other "value" priced shotguns which are also none the less respectable in their own right but do not have as much "down the road" potential as an 870.
