Remington 870 Express Super Magnum

I've got a remington 870 express super magnum http://www.remington.com/NR/exeres/...0503E10FE5}&NRQUERYTERMINATOR=1&cookie_test=1 , and I was wondering if anyone knew of a place to get a shorter barrel for it?

Its chambered to take 2 3/4, 3, and 3 1/2 shells, which I like. I'd like to have a shorter barrel to keep on it at home since 28 inches isnt the most maneuverable. I've searched around and I never see any barrels for the super magnum, just 3 inch. Will normal barrels fit or do they HAVE to be for the super magnum?

I'd also like some advice on any extras that might make this better for 'home defense' since the nearest range is only 25 yds, and if youre using a shotgun it HAS to be slugs. I dont have money to go plinking with slugs, so I havent checked it out yet.

I wouldnt mind an extension to the mag tube but this is a fairly recent model so it has the lock on the safety to lock the gun up and I'm sure its got the little nubs to prevent any reliable feeding, and I don't have a dremel.

Any help is appreciated! If you own the same shotgun feel free to chime in and say how you like it and any problems you may have come across with it.

Unless they ahve changed things in the past couple of years, an 870 barrel is an 870 barrel.

They should all interchange with each other 100%.

Thanks for the information guys! Don't worry, if I get a new barrel I wont be trying to use no 3 1/2 magnums in it. I havent even shot a 3 1/2 shell yet, but its nice to know my gun can handle all three (until I change the barrel out, at least. Hehe.) ;)

I have heard arguments that the receivers are all the same. I've also heard that there was a difference between the magnums, express, and super mag receivers.

I never pursued it much, I honestly don't know if there is a difference.
Personally, I doubt there is, and if so, it's probably only the bolt that is different.

The reciever on my 870 18" says... "Remington 870 Express MAGNUM." Does that mean I can shoot magnum ammunition out of my shotgun or is that just a part of the naming prefix?

Remington barrels have the max shell length printed on them. 870 receivers are made for 2 3/4", 3" and 3 1/2" shells. The ONLY shells to use in them are the longest listed for both or shorter.

870s that have serial numbers ending in V are for 2 3/4" shells. M at the end means 3" mag. Super Mag on the receiver denotes 3 1/2" capability.

HTH....

I have an 870 super mag express. I used the 3 1/2 inch shells once for goose hunting! Never again! I can bring down just as many birds with 3 inch shells and not get beat up. Trust me! The 3 1/2 inch shells are brutal.

I have an 18 barrel that I put on my super mag and it fit just fine. The barrel says 2 3/4. But I never shot the gun! Please don't put a bigger shell in the chamber than what the barrel says. If the barrel says 3 inch don't try 3 1/2!

Amen! No need to worry about me, I'm no newbie to firearms. Great advice for anyone just starting out though.

I just thought of another question. Since the barrel is obviously a little bigger, would it have problems shooting rifled slugs? Since it can shoot 3 1/2 inchers, would that mess with a 2 3/4 slug? Or is the barrel not that much different so it wouldnt effect it?

The only way to tell what a given slug will do in a given barrel is to shoot the thing. Short slugs work OK in longer chambers in my experience, and the mag slugs will tear a new one PDQ.
