Remington 870 Express Extended Tube?

Just recently purchased a Remington 870 Express Synthetic with the extended shell tube. The extension was factory installed, so that is how I bought it. The manual that comes with the extension states that it can hold 7 to 8 shells, however I can only fit 6 shells of 2 3/4" length. When trying to insert the 7 shell it goes halfway but can't be pushed any further. Does anyone know if 6 is the greatest amount of 2 3/4" shells that can be inserted into the extension tube? Thanks for any info.

The ones that can feed three-inch shells can also use shorter ones. 2 3/4, 2 inches, whatever.

870s have problems feeding those Aguila 2" shells though.. :(

Yes 6 is the most. When they say 7 to 8 shot they are really saying 6 + 1 or 7 + 1. Besides the extra space will ensure the spring has more life to it. Enjoy your 870 I have the same one you do. When I bought mine on 9/11 (just a co-wink-i-dink) I paid $299, but now I see them at the local shop for $369 :eek:

To Expand on what has already been Posted the 18in. brl. model will hold 6+1 and the 20in. brl. models 7+1 two and three quarter in. shells. That would probably be the reason for the two listed capacities. If you want to use 3 in. Mag shells (and enjoy the sledgehammer to the shoulder recoil experiance) you will have to reduce mag loading even more. Consider downloading the mag. tube by one round to keep the mag spring from being compressed to the max to increase spring life. My H.D. shotty stays in standby with loaded mag and empty chamber. Remember Safety takes no coffee breaks! Hope this helps(unless it is incorrect then it won't help much at all.) Al in Md.

To refine all of the above;
If you bought an 870 with an 18" barrel and factory extension, you will be able to put 6 + 1 in it. The 20" barrel (like mine) will hold 7 + 1. The "+" is the round in the chamber, if you were wondering.

Thanks for all the information. I actually paid $350 with the extension installed. I saw the same model without the extension for $300.

Concerning spring life, I currently have 6 shells in the extension, I don't chamber the shotgun. Should I only put in 5 to increase spring life? Please don't forget that with 6 shells I have about 1.5" of space that the spring can be still compressed. So it the spring isn't fully compressed. Again thanks for all the info.

nope it is fine like that. I have had mine loaded with 6 federal 000 rounds since day 1, so about 165 days. I have been to the range a few times and never had a problem. So with my experence, which is still kinda limited at this time, you should be fine with loading 6 2.75 inch rounds in the magtube. Oh, one more thing, I recently checked the strength of my mag spring and compared it to a new one( same model right next to each other) and there was no difference that I could tell.

I thought Remington was so PC they wouldn't sell the 870 with an extended magazine tube. Was it really factory installed? I wonder if you have to get it from the Custom Shop? I know the 870 Police comes that way but I wasn't aware the Express did.

Yep, factory installed. I've seen a number of these HD guns with the 18 inch barrel and extended magazine. The Remington extensions are of decent quality and look good.
