remington 870 12ga forend

No help here per se but what is the fore-end nut? I have recently acquired a 870express magnum.

There us a wrench for that which can be had for about $17 or more like $35 for a good one. If you do, clamp some locking pliers on the slide. You can use the platform that the bolt slides on, but it can slip and may not be a good idea if yours is real tight. You may want to use some PB Blaster of WD40 but don't until someone with more experience chimes in as I suppose it could somehow mess with the wood of your forestock. Some might tell you to use needle point pliers - DO NOT!

careful!!!!

Yeah, you can buy the wrench easy enough, but there's still a good chance you'll torque the action bars trying to get the nut off, and if you do,...the pump action will bind and the gun is pooched.

Look in Brownells catalog for new forend metal. If you're setting up a turkey gun of a tac shotgun, new metal is not that bad price wise, especially if you get the matte or parkerized finish, and you'll be ahead in the long run.

I used a pair of needle nose pliers. Spread em open, put them in the slots and twist the pliers.

On an older gun, you might need to spray down the area with some pb blaster or other loosening agent.

Thanks for the info.

^^^ You used good sense going to the gunsmith. I met to recommend that if this is once in a blue moon need for the tool but I forgot to suggest. The tool also aids in centering the fore end on the receiver when tightening the nut. If it is off center, the forend can rub against one side of the receiver and wear the bluing off.
