I just saw a review on these and I must say I am intrigued by a couple things. First, they said the mag is great for a budget gun. Steel lip at the rear to make sure it stays in and actually feeds. They showed how quickly the mag can be slammed securely home and its impressive. Mags can be a achillles heel for a budget rifle. Next, the trigger is a very good copy of the accutrigger, but if you inadvertently bump the trigger and not the release, it will not decock like the accutrigger. That is nice. All in all I like what I see. Need to get my hands on one...
 
The 783 is a good gun, even though it has some problems. The tupper ware stock is pretty flimsy, but I fixed that by filling the air spaces between the webs in the fore arm and stock with some rock hard epoxy. That stiffend the stock up and increases the accuracy of the gun. They also use a nut on the barrel and allows you to use other caliber barrels on one gun. Switch barrel did you say, yes!
I was going to blue print this action and found out that the 783 has way less run out on the action and bolt than its big brother, the model 700. The lugs didn't require very much lapping either. Since the first one I have Converted 6 rifles into switch barrel gun for relatives and hinting buds. I am totally impressed with the 783 and they are a highly accurate rifle along with being affordable.
 
I'm interested in the 783 as well. Possibly to build as a .375Reaper. Anyone know how the barrel removes as well as what barrels could fit?
 
I bought a 783 compact in 308 and like it way better than the couple of Savage Axis I had before it.

The magazine insertion and retention is much better than the Axis.

The fall rebate just went out on them.
 
even though i am a savage guy when i had the american, the axis and 783 in my hand, the 783 just felt and shouldered better for me. but everybody is different.....
