Remington 7600 Question

I was reading in another thread about this rifle with the 18.5" barrel, which is only available in .30-06. I am wondering how much velocity loss and how much handier it is, compared to the 22" barrel?
 
That depends on a few factors. Are you planning on cutting your barrel or getting a new gun? Are you hunting thick brush or open fields? Answers to these questions will provide info that will make your questions easier to answer.
 
It is impossble to predict with any accuracy. Even guns with equal barrel lengths often will be 100 fps or more different. I've seen guns with fast 20" barrels shoot faster than guns with slow 22" barrels. It could be as little as 50-75 fps slower or as much as 150 fps slower.

To be honest you'll be fine. At worst it will still be about the same speed as a 308 from a 22-24" barrrel. They kill stuff pretty well.
 
the 16" to 20" 30-06 rifles I have had were good on accuracy but launched epic fireballs out the muzzle. If you go that short 308 starts looking better.
 
I have a 7600POLICE. It is a .308 with 16 1/2 inch bbl. It has a very servicable synthetic stock and a very durable matte black metal finish. Ear protection is definately in order when shooting this little beast at the range.

I have never shot it over a chrono, but with the minimum published loads of H335 and 150 gr. Nosler BTips, it shoots inch groups at 100 yards with a 9x scope and 2-3 inch loads with a Truglo red dot. Last year using that load, I shot a medium buck at 200+ yards and a doe at 20 yards.

This year, using 165 cast bullets at about 1700 FPS, I have killed a button buck and a small doe. Both under 20 yards. Both dropped like stuck by lightning.

If the mastadons or wooly mammoths ever come in season, I have two boxes of 180 factory WWs that should do the job.
 
Don't have the 7600 carbine in 06, but do have a 7400...

Velocity lost is as about 150-200fps depending on load, but the short stiff barrel is one accurate shooter...
 
I have the 760 carbine in 30-06. It is the pre-7600 model. 18 1/2" barrel.
I use it for night time hog hunting. The flame ball is huge enough to be seen by the space station! and it is loud! Don't know about velocity decrease, but at 60 yards it knocks the snot out of hogs. Within ten feet it would burn the hair off them to boot. ;)
 
I prefer to shorten a standard rifle to 20" over a factory carbine ! 18 1/2" is a little short for an 06 in my opinion , especially if you don't handload ! They used to make the 760 carbine in .308 , 270 and 280 , also I've heard .35 Rem. , but I've never seen one . I charge $50.00 to cut and crown a barrel . The Carbines are usually priced $100.00 more than a rifle at least . Not a sound investment in my opinion . The ones stamped Carbine do have better resale value , but they should have , they cost more in the first place ! I have never seen one shoot worse after having the barrel shortened , usually gets better , shorter = stiffer , which means more accuracy . Love the Rem. pumps from Mod. 14 on up !

feel slighted.
You or the animal on the other aint gonna see any
detectable difference in velocity loss.
One would have to shoot many many times to the limits of the cartridge
to see issues and they would have to have different length
barrels for their benchmark.
Chronies give you a number and that's it---show me evidence
in real life.
