Remington 760 30-06 to 308 conversion

I have a Remington early production 760 in 30-06 and have located a 308 barrel for it -- what other components (besides the magazine) need to be changed out to make it a 308? Do the shorter cartridge versions have a shorter stroke, i.e. is the mag spacer at the front, so the stoke remains the same, or at the rear, allowing a shorter stoke, and if so what part shortens the stroke? I have ordered a headspace gauge set, so that will be properly checked.

The mag spacer may not be necessary. When I converted my Garand to .308 I found that a mag spacer was totally optional. It functioned fine without a spacer. Now I just keep it in there to keep someone from trying to stuff 06's into it.

Just for curiosity why are you guys "downgrading?" a 30-06 to .308? I am not knocking this I am legitimetly interested in why you would want to.

To take advantage of the low cost good quality mil surplus ammo available -- it makes it practical to burn up 100's of rounds in practice, and have a few hundred around all the time without big investment.

Since the only carbine-length barrel I could get was 308, and I wanted a shorter barrel, it was either shorten the orginal or switch. This way I still have 30-06 with the old barrel, and fortunately headspace is correct with either.

Okay cool. That's a good idea. I keep hearing about those saiga .308 rifles. An inexpensive rifle and lots of cheep ammo out there make it appealing for me as a future purchase.
thanks
