Remington 7400 in 30-06. Should I?

Less than a box of cartridges through it, comes with an extra 10 round mag. Wood stocks. This would be my first rifle (except for my 10/22's and a .45 carbine).

The dealer wants $400 for it. I haven't seen it yet. What do you all think?

Ledbetter,
I just found this site for the Remington 700 and 7400. But depending on the condition I should think $400 a fair price. That and how much open space you need to fill in the safe to keep the other rifles cozy :)

The 7400 in 30-06 that I played with was a fine rifle. Didn't jam in about 75 rounds and was a pussycat as far as recoil goes to boot. Accuracy was around an inch at 100 yards with a 3-9X scope on it.

$400 sounds fair.

Buy it. Just keep it very clean and shoot good, clean, *FACTORY* ammo through it. Mine shot Remingtom and Winchester ammo fine, but did not like PMP.

Also, keep the chamber lean and dry, it will aid extraction.

I live in northern WI and see a lot of 7400's in the woods during deer season. Most of the group I hunt with has them. I have never seen a gun that has as many problems as the 742-7400 rifles, if it gets dirty it jams, if it gets cold it jams, if it gets dry it jams, to much lube, you gussed it, it jams. I sold mine after one season and would never get another one. Most of the gun shops around here have them for $250-$350 after deer season.

You could do better for the $400. That rifle has a habit of hanging up, failing to cycle and sometimes really jamming up, like having to bang a jammed round out. The gas system is easy to manufacture and cheap. The fire control mechanism (trigger group) is, well, cheap. It uses sheet stock stamped parts. Yea, I know, they don't kick, they are good for "spray and pray" style hunting and everybody has an uncle who killed a big buck with one - they sold many, many of them.

If you are bent on a semi-auto, go with the BAR, even though they are more money. For "fast follow-up (?) shot repeaters the Remeington pumps are ok, especially after they went with fewer and larger lockin lugs and the Browning pump is even better. The Browning BLR is excellent.

There are many 4s and 7400s out there but more than one camp has heard the "my 4 won't shoot no more" crying in the middle of deer hunting.
