Remington 722 question

I bought my 11 year old Grandson this rifle in 300 Savage.
This rifle has the 2 position safety that locks the action closed IF the safety is applied AFTER the bolt is closed. If the safety is applied before the bolt is closed the bolt can be opened and closed without taking it off safe.
Is this an acceptable way of operating this rifles safety?
I have not found a manual for this rifle.
Thank you
Greg

Congratulations

YOUR GRANDSON NOW OWNS ONE OF THE FINEST BOLT-ACTION RIFLES EVER CREATED BY HUMAN HANDS---THE REM MODEL 721/722 SERIES WAS MADE FROM 1948-1962 & FEATURES THE ORIGINAL "WALKER FIRE CONTROL & SAFETY MECHANISM"

WHEN THE BOLT IS MOVED FORWARD, & LOCKED DOWN, THE MANUAL SAFETY IS MOVED TO THE REAR. THE TRIGGER IS BLOCKED & THE BOLT CANNOT BE OPERATED.

WHEN THE SAFETY IS MOVED TO THE FORWARD POSITION, THE RIFLE CAN BE FIRED & THE BOLT WILL CYCLE NORMALLY FOR THE NEXT SHOT. IF YOU OPT TO EMPTY THE MAGAZINE, THE SAFETY MUST BE KEPT IN THE FORWARD POSITION, WITH FINGER OFF TRIGGER, & CYCLE THE BOLT AS USUAL UNTIL THE MAG IS EMPTY.

PULL THE TRIGGER & GENTLY EASE THE BOLT BACK INTO THE RECEIVER AT THE SAME TIME. KEEPING PRESSURE ON THE TRIGGER, GENTLY LOWER THE BOLT HANDLE. TA-DA !!!! THE BOLT HAS NOW BEEN DECOCKED & IS READY FOR STORAGE.

I HAVE A MODEL 721 (long action) .30-06 SPRINGFIELD, THAT WAS MADE IN 1953. ABSOLUTELY A JOY TO SHOOT & TROUBLE-FREE ALL THESE YEARS, BECAUSE OF AN EXCELLENT ORIGINAL DESIGN & PROPER FREQUENT "TLC"

PROMISE YOU HE WILL NEVER NEED ANOTHER FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE & WELCOME TO THE BROTHERHOOD OF GUYS WHO LOVE THE OLD POST-WW2 REMINGTON RIFLES. OOOO-RAH !!!

Perfect

When unloading , there is no need to close the bolt , just push the round forward till it clears the magazine , retract bolt , dump round out the top . Every injury and fatality supposedly caused by a defective safety on Rem. rifles was caused by unsafe gun handling , the safety was a contributing factor at most . Rule one , keep muzzle pointed in a safe direction at ALL TIMES ! Of course this includes loading and unloading ( ALL TIMES ). The .300 Savage is darn near a perfect caliber for a youngster , plenty of power with little recoil !

Thanks for the supporting comments.
I fell in love with this rifle last spring at a gun show and there was no other rifle in that show that I felt was as fitting for that 11 Year old Boy! ;)

Now as for the safety features my original question was not commented on and until I learn otherwise I will have him lock the bolt.
I do need to know if the alternate feature of applying the safety before closing the bolt, thereby having the safe on but the bolt is unlocked is a normal function or do i have an issue with this rifle?

Kind of like, but much different than when I am shooting/hunting with my flint lock rifle, I set my trigger before I cock the cocking piece. My trigger is then prepared for the "power flick" trigger action.

MR. GBRO:

I APOLOGIZE FOR OVERLOOKING THIS SPECIFIC ITEM IN THE CONTEXT OF YOUR QUESTION REGARDING YOUR REM MODEL 722.

WITH THE BOLT HANDLE UP & THE BOLT RETRACTED TO THE REAR, THE MANUAL SAFETY CAN BE MOVED TO THE REAR (on safe position), CLOSE THE BOLT & LOWER THE HANDLE. THE SAFETY WILL REMAIN ENGAGED. RIFLE WILL NOT FIRE. PUSH SAFETY TO THE FORWARD (off) POSITION & KA-BOOM !!!!!

HOPE THIS CLEARS UP ANY "OOOPS" I HAD LEFT OUT. THE POST-WAR REMINGTON MODEL 721 & 722 RIFLES WERE AT THE APEX OF RIFLE DESIGN & PERFORMANCE. HOWEVER, THE COSMETICS COULD STILL BE IMPROVED. INTO THE OPERATING ROOM WENT PHYLLIS DILLER & POW OUT CAME BEAU DEREK---THE MODEL 700 WAS BORN---SAME RIFLE, JUST PRETTIER TO LOOK AT !!!!

OR,
move the safety to the rear and the bolt will lock. However there is no way then to open the bolt without releasing the safety.
I need to find the manual then and see if this is fully covered.
The Grandson will be carrying this rifle when our firearms deer season opens tomorrow morning. :)
He is only 11 and has his FAS certificate, however the state allows 10 & 11 year old's to hunt.
He also has the last orange FAS certificate. From now on a FAS cert. is printed at any ELS spot and is plane, generic sticker material just like a fishing hunting license. :-@
