Remington 700P vs SS 5R

Hey everyone, long time lurker, first time poster here. I'm looking to get a rifle in .308 for some target shooting and hunting hopefully out past 500 yards. I've been reading a lot online and have narrowed down my choices to the Remington 700 Police and the 700 SS 5R Milspec. I know the 5R is a little more expensive, about $150 more than the Police, and I'm wondering if the extra cost is worth it.

Also, I know the 7mm is often considered a better hunting round and it shoots flatter but as for now I'm going to go with the .308. So between these two in .308, which one would ultimately suit my needs best? Thanks!

Safe to say that either would do the job for you. Pretty much any rifle made these days is going to be good for hunting - you don't need .5 MOA to hit Bambi in the engine room. I have never personally fired either of the rifles you are looking at, but with rifles at that level, the difference is likely to unnoticable unless you are a competition shooter. I say pick the one you like best, and you will be happy.

I have both, and accuracy is about equal ~ .30 moa with hand loads. The only difference I have seen is using factory ammo (Black Hills & Federal GMM) where the 700P has the edge. Either is more accurate than you will need and are solid rifles. For the extra $150 I like the stainless barrel & receiver of the 5R and it is way easier to clean... very little copper fouling.

Do some research on the trigger assembly if you are buying a used gun. A very limited few have had issues with accidental discharge when turning off the safety. 700s made after 2007 have a new and different trigger system which eliminated this potential problem.

Most of problems with the triggers were people incorrectly adjusting them to lighten up the pull weight. If done correctly or simply left to factory spec then it's a non-issue. Always have a smithy check out a used gun if you can't do it yourself.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. As for loads, I wont be shooting a ton and I don't think I'll be reloading myself.

Rich, in regards to purchasing, I will be buying new so the adjusted trigger issue shouldn't impact me too much.

Also, I'm leaning towards the police, which will give me some extra money for a nicer scope from the get go; but I'm still looking to hear and read more about it before I make my final decision. Thanks everyone!

Sounds like a solid call... the extra $150 will definitely help you get some better glass on it.

Never seen a bad report on either however i own a 5R and for a factory rifle it's pretty impressive. What barrel length do you want? Twist? I also think it's a good call to go with the 700P and save for better glass. Again you can't go wrong with either.

Both triggers leave a lot to be desired when compared to a Jewell or Timney
How so? I've seen rifles discharge when closing bolts using Jewells and my tuned factory trigger is just as crisp as my Timney, at least I can't tell a difference.

I have the 5r it's a GREAT rifle!! I get dime size groups at 100 yards shooting 150gr accubonds. the 5r rifling makes it very easy to clean. When I was deciding between the two i decided to go with the 5r mainly because you dont see it as often as you do the 700p . but I guess you couldn't go wrong with either they will both be very accurate!

I purchased a 5R October 2011 and really like the way it performs. The only thing I don't like about the rifle is the trigger. Hoping to replace it before the year is out. There is this little screw under the trigger that allows you to adjust it down a pound or two but no where near the 2 - 2 1/2 pounds I prefer. I've only been able to get it down to 3 1/2 pounds. At that point you can wiggle the trigger side to side with your fingers. Not good.

Buy the 5R

I've been going through the same battle and I'm going to buy the 5R. There's just something about the way that rifle feels in my hands. The balance and length of pull is perfect for me. As for fit and finish it just looks sweet! As for the trigger that is easy enough to work with as others have stated or replace it with a Timmey. :)

No matter what it is.. It has to be installed and adjusted by someone that knows what there doing.. Any Remington I've shot, made in the last 10 or so years hasn't had a good factory trigger... Even the X-Mark Pro was substandard out of the box..
