Remington 700

Hi,

I'm just starting to get into Fire Arms and am thinking about getting a Remington 700 as my first rifle.

What do you guys think of this rifle and what kind of scope would you recommend for simple target shooting? Which variant of this rifle would you recommend? The Remington site lists many and I have no idea what all those features on those rifles mean.

Thanks in advance.

Let's just say---look for something other than the Remington----my buddy and I have had nothing but bad luck with model 700's. Don't get me started------as for the scope-----get a Leupold.

The Remngton 700 is an excellant choice for a first rifle. If you are only going to be punching paper and not carrying it in the field the 700VS can't be beat. It comes in a couple of calibers, I had a .308 and it shot great. Also if you are looking to customize there's no better platform to start from than the 700 action. You will also find it easier to find anything from stocks to scope mounts for the Reminton because they are so widely used. Just as a rebutal I have many friends as well as myself who have multiple Remington 700s and have never had a problem with them.

As far as the scope definately go Leupold. A good Vari X III variable scope would do you good. What ranges will you be shooting? Also get the best mount and rings you can afford. There's nothing worse than putting a great scope in cheap rings and having problems.

What Rob01 said. Use the search function for the 700 and despite what a few say about it, most folks recognize it as a durable, accurate, dependable firearm for hunting and target shooting.

The Model 700 would be a great first centerfire rifle. However, if you have not owned any rifle before, I would suggest a good .22. You can buy 500 rounds of .22 LR ammo for what might only get you 20 rounds of centerfire ammo (depending on calibre). This will let you pratice a lot more. Also the .22 has little recoil which will let you hone your skills without developing a flinch. The Ruger 10/22 is an excellent rifle and would be my recommendation. Start off with the open sights and then go to a scope if you still want to. As far as scopes go, I have never met anyone who was sorry that they bought a Leupold. HTH

PS - Welcome to TFL!

I have no argument against the Remington 700. BUT: If you are just starting out, I strongly recommend a bolt-action .22 with iron sights. The first thing to learn is the self-discipline to not just "burn ammo"--and Sight Picture.

Once you get accustomed to all the safety issues and the sighting and trigger control, you can add a scope. You can have a gunsmith smooth the trigger, if necessary. You can practice the eye-hand coordination necessary to be able to hit a target from other than a benchrest.

That's the kindergarten stage. A few months at most, I'd guess, if you have free weekends...

By then, you will have been hanging around a few gunstores, and reading the BS here at TFL and be better able to make an intelligent decision about your primary interests.

Don't ever be in a hurry to spend your money. It goes out a lot faster and easier than it comes in, and they ain't gonna quit selling rifles anytime soon.

A .22 is a good idea for a first rifle. The Remington model 700 is an excellent choice of a gun. Many of the best competitors use that rifle as a base for modification into benchrest, International 300M, military and civilian sniper/tactical rifles(U.S. Army M-24 and U.S.M.C. M-40A1), Highpower 1000yd match guns, hunting guns ad nauseum. My only two complaints are the safety (skins me a little from time to time-but that is more from my technique of operating the bolt) and the Extractor. Other than that it is an very capable gun and has much potential for whatever your needs. I am currently building one now into a tactical rifle.
