Remington 700 VS- 308 Brass scuffing

Am new to this site, although have been lurking for sometime, just never thought I had anything to add.

A question to you "pro's". I recently purchase a new 700 and have noticed that it scuffs the brass fairly significantly when chambering a round from the lips on the magazine well. Has anybody experienced this and what's a good solution. A little polishing is probably in order but what's the best method?

Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with my VS, too. I don't know if it's the mag spring that needs to be broken in , or if the follower is too rough.

I'm only doing single shot now, and I don't see a period where I'll be using really carefully prepped handloads in the mag.

Curious to hear of any solutions that anyone else can think of.

Brass scuffing

I had a 30-30 Marlin at one time with what they called a "Chattered Chamber". They rifle was not chambered properly.

Tshoes-But, what exactly do you mean by "Scuffing".?

Response Heavy linear scratching/abrasion, thereby making "chambering" difficult without additional force on the bolt.

Response- doesn't appear as if the follower on mine is to rough or the spring to heavy. Scratches are coming from the right hand upper lip of the magazine well.

thx.

Icebite.......

I think you will find your problem is not the mag well or spring...........or follower.
You, if you can look closely, will probably feel, or see a burr on the entrance to the chamber itself.....THIS is what is causing the linear scratches.
Take it to a smith, and have him smooth this edge down a bit....this should take care of the problem.
This is common, and no big deal........

I had this same problem with a 700 VS chambered in .308. It could be a burr at the chamber entrance, but in my case it was the way the round rides up and into the the chamber. Mine was scratching well before it was getting to the chamber. Take it apart, and stone the rails, and do a little polishing with 600 grit sand paper. Remington is getting sloppy with their castings.

To All!!

Got the problem solved by using a Dremel and some polishing compound. Buffed the follower until reasonably shiny and also buffed the magazine well lips. Works great with no brass abrasion.

Incidently, 1st time out with this piece this afternoon, (bought new in the box) and it prints clover leaf paterns at 100 yards, ie; well under 1 moa, when I do my job right. I'm a happy camper. Now to test for 200, 500 and maybe a 1000 yard capability.

Thanks to all for the input

Sling Shot: Remington 700 Receivers are not cast, they are forged and machined unless there has been a MAJOR change in the 700 series.

Great news....glad it wasn't the other............
it will do very well at the ranges you described IF you have the right ammo, and skill level to pull it off.
Best of luck!!!!!!!;)
