What's the word on this rifle? I have heard that it is being discontinued. I am curious because I am wanting to get one and use it as a platform to build something perfect for me. Should I hurry up and buy it or do I still have time to price shop?

I bought two in 7mm08 from Buds for right around $650.00 a few years back. Don't know about them being discontinued unless Remington is coming out with a different varmint barreled gun of similar cost. HB's are a pretty popular item now.

And, you are right, they aren't much more than barreled donor actions. All the peripherals are junk.

Dick's Sporting Goods has them on sale alot for 499. Great rifle, are you going to use it for hunting or target shooting. I have a 700, after shooting 4000+ rounds, had the action blueprinted new M24 5R Rock Creek barrel installed, just love the rifle. I don't think there discontinuing the SPS Varmint, you can't go wrong.

I've not heard any rumors that Remington is going to discontinue the model but could not find one a few months back when I was looking. It is an excellent beginning platform for a tactical/varmint rifle and with all the aftermarket parts available for it you can build what you want out of it at your leisure.

Best prices ive seen were on the sps were on grabagun ...$538~599 lot of calibers in stock.

Were the ones Dicks runs on the black friday sales SPS ? Im almost sure they were like a ADL version with a blind magazine. They ran them on sale 2 years ago for $349 or 379 IIRC

I love mine. I have one in .308. The stock is junk, so I swapped it out for a choate tactical and the recalled trigger for a timney calvin elite. Now the only thing i want to change is upgraded glass, as i just have a nikon prostaff 3-9 on it.

Out of the box the gun would shoot sub MOA, now it does apreciably better.

I am a 700 enthuses I would buy it. One of my Son's decided to jump into the new rifle market for him and his wife. He came across a $260 buy on a 770 and a Savage equivalent priced similarly in a 243 and 270. The cheep plastic stocks are not at all to my liking. I don't see any thing wrong with the rifles functions but I think He would of been much better off to purchase a 700. Blainer I think you will be much farther ahead with the 700. I believe with Remington 700 Models the more you spend the more you get.

I've got one in .308. I put an HS precision PSS stock on it and a Vortex Viper scope. It shoots better than I can with Federal 168 gr GMM ammo. I also added a Harris bipod. Can't speak for others but I like mine.

I just got the SPS tactical 300 blackout. The thing was a tack driver out of the box, I'm a pretty good shooter and the gun was more accurate than me.

On a lead sled I was able to achieve sub-MOA accuracy at 100 yards with handloads, and they were not my "good" handloads, just decent components loaded with care.

The whole SPS line is Remington's entry level M700 line. Nothing really special about 'em. Don't think I'd by a new SPS just for the action though. Used would do. Think about the receiver length vs the cartridge you want to use.
And Remington nor any of the manufacturers ever announce they're going to discontinue anything. They just do it.

The SPS I bought a couple of years back is an excellent shooter. It was sub MOA out of the box, but as one poster noted, it shoots much better with a few tweaks, the stock being the most important.
