Remington 700 Questions

Well, I have narrowed my search down to a Remington Model 700 Sendero, I think. I have a few questions though. I have only been able to physically touch the Sendero 7mm not the .300 WinMag that I think I want. It would have to be ordered. Some of the guns sales people tell me the 7mm is the way to go. I looked at the cartridges and they are identical except for the size of the bullet... the 7mm bullet is slightly narrower, and I'm told is shoots flatter. What are the thoughts here of the 7mm versus the .300 WinMag? Accuracy and knockdown, and even availability in the future. Some say the 7mm is an new cartridge, but I believe it dates back over 30 years, yes?

Now, I have a second concern with the stock. I would like to get a Choate sniper stock (maybe) for the Sendero. But, I live in CA, and the question was just presented to me "Is it legal?"....

Utimately, I will get a Leupold for the weapon for sure. But, in the interm I need a GOOD cheap scope. This combo will be my Christmas present from my wife but I don't expect her to spend as much as it will take to complete the rifle. A good rifle, stock, and cheap scope will work for starters then I can do some upgrading and tweaking myself a little later. I viewed a Simmons (cheap) 4-12X50 scope that appeared to be nice. I was told by a friend to check out Burris too, but they are more $ than I want my wife to spend.

I came here to ask the pros...since I am so far removed on today's weaponry... Thanks for any/all feedback...

I would seriously consider getting one of the non-belted short magnums instead of the belted mags.

Accuracy tends to be a bit better with unbelted rounds. Handloading is also usually a bit easier if you don't have a belt.

Both the .300 & 7mm mags are about the same age, both are excellent cartridges, and both are capable of taking just about any game in North America.

Future availability is, really, a given considering how popular both cartridges are right now.

Try Bushnell scopes.

I may have missed what you will be hunting. For deer sized game I'd choose the 7mm. Less recoil makes it a little more pleasant to shoot. If you don't reload I'd stick with the belted 300 or 7mm mag. Lot easier to find ammo for them. Most any country store will have 7mmmag ammo.
With whatever brand of low cost scope you choose be sure to get one of their better models.

Well I don't hunt animals anymore. Gave that up after Viet Nam. From what I could see the 7mm cartridge and the .300 cartridge are exactly alike except for the dia of the bullet. I would image that the recoil would be about equal, but recoil never bothers me anyway. I want accuracy, knowdown power, and distance ability just because I enjoy that type of shooting, or did some years ago.

I dunno as I'm really into the "ammo available anywhere" justification. The one time I ever forgot ammo, I fell back on my spare rifle and all was well. That's one trip in ??? years!

Scope? I have a Simmons 44Mag on my pet '06. It works just fine at my 500 yard targets. It was on special at Cheaper Than Dirt for $99...In four years, it has held zero and not given up in a 4WD on rough jeep trails. I dunno; maybe 200 rounds.

I admit to being intrigued by what I've been reading about these short Maggies. If I had a need for more than an '06, I'd probably go that route...

Key, I had to make the same choice and went with the 300WM. I love it. The recoil isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I just shot 30 rounds yesterday and my shoulder's fine. Also might I add I think I almost found "the load" for mine. It shot a 1/4" 5 shot group at 100 and a 1 3/4" at 300 with three of those being inside a 1/2". I still have to play with it a bit but I know I'm close. I want to close that 300 yards down to around an inch even if it opens my 100 yards up a bit because this is my distance gun. I have my .308 for closer stuff. That was with a stock Remington 700P which is the same barreled action as the Sendero. The only thing I really did was have the stock bedded and ran the David Tubb Final Finish through the bore. I highly recomend the latter. I like throwing a 190 grn bullet at almost 3000 fps. It definately would have some knock down power. Let us know what you decide.
