Remington 700 Long Range? Quality???

I spend a bit of time in the local fun store when I go to work waiting on my train to actually get called. The last time I was in there, I was looking at both a Savage 110BA in .338 Laupa and a Remington 700 Long Range in .300 Winchester Magnum. Well, the Savage is kind of spendy and the ammo...well, that's spendier so now I'm thinking about the Remington 700. I still have my old Remington 700VS in .308 that is a tack driver but I also got that rifle in the early-mid 90s. I am just thinking of getting a similar rifle but in a heavier caliber for longer ranges since my shooting range at the farm is a full 1,000 meters and I can still keep on going out to 2,000 meters if I get a rifle with longer legs.
The big question is what is the quality like on modern (2014 when this rifle was introduced) Remington products? I seen first hand what they did with the Remlin rifles and there are stories about their QC not being really what it should be these past few years. So what has anybody's experience with recent Remington rifles been over the past couple years?

I bought a brand new 770 in .308 last year on a whim (it was way cheap), and the barrel is awesome, around an inch a 100, pretty good for a cheap rifle. The 770 is nowhere near a top notch gun but it does shoot good!

I know you are talking 700 not 770, but I figure if they have a really good barrel on the budget line, then the 700 barrel must be at least that good if not better

I have an SPS VS from 2013, no issues that I can find. Threw the SPS stock away and put a B&C Medalist on it.

Just looked at the Long Range, nice rifle. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute.

My problem with the .338 Lapua is that on average of $5 per round, the dang thing ought to be self guided! >:( I'm not made of money and to get a good data set out of that round is prohibitevly expensive.

The Long Range is a SPS in a B&C Medalist M40 stock for about the same price as a SPS Varmint in the standard crap Remington SPS stock costs. So, you save $250.00 off the top. Swap out the trigger for a Timney and you have a LA tack driver in more powerful cartridge choices.

My 7mm08 started as a regular SPS with the 26" varmint contour barrel. I had the barrel cut to 20" and recrowned. Dropped it in a B&C Light Medalist and put the Timney in it. Ground off the factory bolt knob, threaded it and put a Badger knob on it then added Wyatt Outdoor's bottom metal. Dipped the stock in Mossy Oak Bottomland, Duracoated the metal and added a Claw Sling and Tactical Works stock pack. Topped it with a DNZ Mount and Trijicon 5X20X50 BAC Amber and turned it into a tack driving, 0.5" grouping, deer killing machine.

I'm seriously considering a LR in 7mmRM or 300WM for the same treatment but with a Nightforce NXS, Burris XCRII or similar optic. Or buy a Sendero or Sako Roughtech Range.

I have two Remington's, an ADL Varmint and an SPS. The ADL is in 308. Cut the barrel to 20" and had a recessed target crown. In the plastic stock with handloads it is capable of .307" center to center, 5 round groups. The SPS is in 300 Win Mag. The barrel and bolt have been fluted, Timney trigger installed and stock replaced with B&C M40, muzzle brake installed and the bolt handle was also skeletonized. Basically it is now a stainless copy of the discontinued 700 Ti Alaskan. Still new to me but shoots great.

This five shot group was shot from 100yds with a new Remington 308 700 SPS 20" AAC shooting factory Federal 175grn Gold Medal Match it measures about .60 MOA. You be the judge if Remington is putting out quality!

You don't see any showroom Impalas on a NASCAR track and you're not likely to see a factory mass produced rifle at the top of the long range ladder. Select a platform you're comfortable with and spend the $$ to make it what you want.
