Remington 700 caliber switch?

So to go from a remington 700 in say 30-06 to 375 h&h what would have to be done to the action and the bolt. I know the barrel would need to be swapped & reamed for correct headspace but how is the bolt face, ejector, magazine, etc converted? Are these parts simply replaced? Also can you buy just a remington 700 action?

First off the 375 needs a magnum length action and the 30-06 "long" action isn't long enough. Besides a 30-06 will do for 90% of all the hunting for big game you are likely to do on this continent.

You could rebarrel to a 9.2x63 or 35 whelen and that would give you ballistics closer to the 375. But a 338 mag would do just as well.

I was really looking into what it would take to make a nice safari rifle. Ive been interested in getting into some gunsmithing projects.

On a Remington 700, you'd have to change the bolt, or have the bolt face opened up to accomodate the .532 rim diameter of the .375 H&H. The cartridge is longer than the .30-06 and I don't know how much room you have in that long action. A barrel swap, for sure. The limiting factor would be the action length. I'm just not sure if a Rem 700 action has enough room in it for the longer cartridge.

However, I"ve seen a .416 Rigby built on a Savage long action. Savage makes their long actions long enough for magnum cartridges. The bolt face is a standard magnum bolt face and Savages are designed for the barrel swap. Any donor action from any local pawn shop could be used, and used Savages sell at the low end of the used rifle market.

You can get extend magazine for the 700

You can open bolt face need to install Sako type extractor or change out bolt and I've done it few times using these

I've got 700 action that never had cut out for safety got it from Dave Manson (Manson reamers) it was a display model showing what all his tooling could do on 700 action. He put Gentry safety on it and I've see 700 with side bolt release lot of little things can be done on 700 action.

I don't know if they still making them but you can get Jewell trigger with bottom safety.

Probably not economically wise to try this conversion. Given enough time and money most anything is possible, but in this case you will be better off to sell the 30-06 and buy a 375. As already stated a 35 Whelen, 9.2X63 or 338/06 conversion would be a lot simpler, but wouldn't offer any real advanages over a 30-06.

I've considered this very conversion and decided against it for a couple of reasons. First, our old 78 is such a good rifle that I am adverse to messing with it. Once a good bolt action is all set and zeroed for a specific load, I won't even remove the barreled action from the stock unless the gun gets soaked.

Given the costs of the conversion (and the sacrifice of a good '06) I believe I'll just bide my time and wait for a good price on a 375. I love the H&H for its mild manners and history, but Ruger's rendition of the cartridge has a lot to offer.

I found that brownells sells remington 700 actions so I wouldnt have to sacrifice a factory gun. Im beginning to think that I may go with something a little smaller like a 300 win mag and just buy a factory rifle shouId i ever decide to hunt on other continents. I love wood working and am planning on duplicating a nice black walnut rem 700 stock then buying the 300 win mag barrel and action, Fitting them, Glass & pillar bedding, trigger work and a few things here and there. Hopefully ill come up with a fairly accurate custom rifle when im done. Ive still got a lot more saving and reading up to do before I even attempt this project.

Considering that Remington offers the M700 in .375 H&H in several different rifles, I'd just buy one. I have a buddy who picked up a SPS for around $700 and dropped it in a Boyd's Classic grey laminate stock. He's going to take it to Africa in June as his duiker rifle, shooting 300 grain solids.

The way that rifle shoots I sure wouldn't build a custom .375 on the Rem 700. His 1900 fps cast bullet loads shoot around .5" groups at 100 and his full power .270 grain loads at 2700 fps shoot just over an 1". With that kind of accuracy and only around $1K invested in the rifle before the scope was added I'd be hard pressed buying the parts to convert your M700 to an H&H.

BTW Remington doesn't make a "Magnum" length action for the H&H cartridge. They fit it in their regular old long action. The bolt stop is moved and the magazine box is larger, but I don't think they open the receiver any for the H&H.

Thats interesting to know. I thought they had a stretched 700 action for the 375, 416 and such. Thats why I get up every morning. I learn something new each day.

SAAMI spec OAL for the 375 H&H is 3.600" it's the same for a 338RUM,300 H&H also 8mmRem mag,7STW and few others.

Inside magazine box for a Rem long action 270,30-06,300 H&H,300RUM is 3.700" all Rem ever done was just change followers.

With the longer VLD bullets and if you wanted to custom throat the option was the Wyatt magazine.

We have one of our local gunsmith he puts this price under misc and this covers lot that can be done with 700 action and others

I've seen some of Weavers custom work on 700 action pretty nice

Here is one of them it's on 722 action

It's never bother me spend extra on Rem or what ever action I have something build if you building it for yourself.
