Remington 600 question. Need Advice

I have the opportunity to purchase a Remington model 600 in .308.
It is my understanding that these rifles were not made for quite some time and are becoming popular with collectors. I can purchase this rifle for 250 bucks from my neighbor. Is this a fair price what are these rifles worth and how do they shoot??
Thanks

Sounds like a good price. There are two versions of the M600. One has a very light barrel with a plastic rib on it and the other has a heavier barrel and is called the Mohawk. Both are 18.5". There was also a M660 that is the same thing but has a heavier 20" barrel. They shoot accurately.

Some people don't like the squarish stock and the dogleg bolt handle.

Swatman. $250 is a good price. last one I looked at, the guy wanted $350. (It was the 660 with 20 in. barrel)
Go for it. Check out the safety. Remington recalled ALL 600's, 660's, and 600 Mohawks and the XP-100's as well due to some safeties being defective. Cock the rifle and put the safety on. Pull the trigger. Take the safety off. Gun should not fire. Repeat. Move the safety lever ever so slightly foreward. Pull the trigger. remove finger from trigger and take gun off safe. Firing pin should not release to fire the rifle.
I'm sure that you and I both know that what was described is definitely unsafe gun handling, but enough dummies have done this with the 600 series that in the early 1980's, Remington recalled all the guns. My 660 did it, and I had the trigger replaced. Now it takes a hydraulic jack to make the gun shoot. Well not any more. I fixed it. :D Still and all, it is nowhere near as nice as the original trigger.
FWIW. The 660 of mine has taken 17 deer with 17 shots. It's a keeper.:D

If the rifle is in good shape, it is well worth the $250 price tag, even if you have to have repairs to the safety. Buy the gun and if you are not pleased, contact me, and I will gladly refund your purchase price if the rifle is in good shape.

Well, I purchased the gun, the safety works perfectly. I really can't wait to shoot this rifle, although the scope that was on it will have to go and be replaced IMO.
Thank heavens for infidelity. The woman was selling her husbands guns and ammo and a bunch of other stuff. Turns out she came home early one day to find him with another woman, sent him packing and was selling off most of his stuff ;)
I got a great deal on a bunch of ammo, AK clips, and an AK mag pouch, and of course this rifle :D

I've kicked myself in the butt for selling mine years ago!

I initially paid $150 for it at a Miami gun shop in 1978. Years later ('85) I sold it for (then) book value of $310.

It was a Mohawk with the plastic (warped) rib and the plastic trigger guard/mag well. But boy did that rifle balance well and shoot superbly! Did thump a little tho.

My 600 is a 6mm whiched was topped w/an older 3x9 Weaver (changed to a Burris mini 6x). It is a great rifle to shoot, (100 Nolsler Partionions) but has become more of a collector than a shooter. It has had a trigger job and the safety reworked (bolt opens w/safety on). I think I paid $200-250 for the rifle a few years back. My opinion of a sweet deal.:D

what a scam artist

your neighbor has alot of nerve trying to rip you off like that. it really burns me up.
what say you give me his phone number and address and i'll square him away for you?

I had a 600 Mohawk in .308 which I gave to a good friend. I still have the Remington 660, also a .308, which I probably will never sell. (17 shots=17 deer :D ) I hated the origional stock, so I made a Mannlicher style stock for it. (600's and 660's make beautiful Mannlicher style rifles.) That stock got broken, so I put the rifle into an early H&S Precision stock, made while they were still in Prescott, Arizona. Stock was for a short action 700 Rem. but I adapted it to the rifle with some cutting and glass bedding. Painted the whole dang thing camouflage. Ain't very pretty, but she's death on deer. Old Weaver K-3 is the scope on it, and that's strong enough for me.
Now I'm looking for another one. FWIW. I got the 660 for $95.00, NIB. The Mohawk I gave away cost me $65, to a guy passing through town who needed money to get to California.
