Remington 597 Question

My son won a 597 in a drawing at Tulsa Red Castle Gun Club's field day this last Sunday. We picked it up from the dealer on Tuesday.

Checking it out at home after he had finished drooling all over it, I noticed that the bolt handle had a lot of play in it - in fact, I consider it wobbly.

Is this normal for this rifle, or should I take it back to the dealer for adjustment. The dealer is a Remington authorized repair center.

Thanks in advance!

Tony, although I don't own the 597, I would consider it normal- my ruger 10-22 has some play. Take it out and shoot it, if it functions fine don't worry about it.

I also have model 597, mine is also very loose, I think you can actually remove the bolt handle for cleaning, try reading the manual in the cleaning section.

FWIW

The charging handle on my 597 is a little loose (if you take hold of it and jiggle it), but not particularly so.

I think the bolt handle is meant to do that, so pulling back on the bolt handle wont cause the back of the bolt to rub against the left guide rail, as it would if it was part of the bolt. If it didnt swivel, the bolt could rub on the rod and could scrap it up so the bolt wouldnt travel smoothly. "Its not a defect, its a feature" :D

Thanks for all the feedback, folks. We shot the little thing for the first time this weekend, and were very pleased by its accuracy.

Not bad for free, not bad at all!
