Remington 597 or Winchester Model 190?

I found these two .22 semi autos for the same price. The Winchester is used, and remington is new with a synthetic stock. Does anyone know anything about them and which is the better gun? I'm just looking for a fun little plinker, nothing really serious.

Thanks.

Neither one is high quality , for sure . Do you want a high capacity tube mag or a clip , would be the major difference ! The good thing about the tube feed is that the tube won't fall out or get left behind .

Why would you say "neither one is high quality" ... I sort of resent that because my 597 is extremely high quality, and it was tuned up with just a few small mods that made a world of difference.

I got my .22LR Remington 597 "sporter combo" model from Dick's for 199.99 - came with a Remington 3-9x32mm scope and rings/base which I've reused and they're fine - upgraded to a Nikon ProStaff 4-12x40mm scope and its amazing. Plus if you do the 2 upgrades that are essential to a 597, the Volquartsen "Edge Extractor" for $19.99 [absolutely essential] and the Volquartsen "Target Hammer" [very very nice to have] ... you've basically COMPLETELY tuned this rifle up to amazing levels.

The 597 doesn't have the cult of personality the 10/22 has but that's part of the reason to buy it... It's a really great rifle that you don't have or need 10000000 aftermarket parts.. If you want to make a 10/22 into a rimfire M249 SAW replica then go ahead. If you want an excellent sporter rimfire or even a AR type rimfire (the VTR, it's not for me but you may like it) then spend $200 and enjoy enjoy enjoy.

My 597 is the one on the bottom , with the OD Green stock (same as the Remington 700 SPS Varmint stock basically)

I'll stand up for the Win 190 too. Extremely well made. The only two complaints you will EVER hear about the 190 is that they tend to have stiff triggers and that they can be a PITA to reassemble if you do a full disassembly.

Too bad you aren't near me in FL. I've got a beautiful 190 just taking up space in my safe that could stand to find a good home.
