Remington 581 Problem.....Help Please??

I am having trouble getting the bolt back into a Remington 581. It will go in most of the way, but will stop half an inch short. I have to pull the trigger before the sear drops enough for the bolt to go home. I tried taking the trigger mechanism apart, to clean it, and looked for anything amiss, but didn't see anything obviously wrong. I am not very familiar with this firearm, so can somebody give me some advice, and/or point me to a parts diagram or exploded view of the bolt and trigger assembly? Thanks in advance.

I'm taking a guess here. The trigger isn't the bolt release on a 541-581, the safety is. With the bolt out, look for a stud sticking up from the bottom of the bolt way, about 1/2" ahead of the bolt handle notch. Push the safety ahead hard; it should go down flush or more. If it does, insert the bolt. That should be the end of the problem.

Next guess. Is the firing pin cocked? Look at the back of the bolt, on the bottom. The cocking piece is the white bar, about 1/8" wide and 3/8" long. It should line up with the long groove in the bolt bottom that goes ahead to the locking lugs. If it's up by the bolt handle, it's uncocked. You might be able to twist it into position by twisting the back of the bolt (bolt plug) clockwise, but you need gorilla fingers. Remington recommends clamping the cocking piece in a vise and lifting the bolt handle. If you've that manual, see page 13.

It getting late. If this don't work, give us a holler.

Bye
Jack
