Remington 221 Fireball XP 100 Handgun

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am looking at getting one of these but was wondering what the recoil is like? Is it like a 357 or less? I have never shot one and just curious about it. I know it is mild in a rifle but how is it in a handgun?
Thanks

Recoil isn't much, but the muzzle blast is ferocious! Worse than a snubby .357 with 125 gr. Magnum loads. It'll ring your ears right through a good pair of 'muffs.

Fired a few in my day's . Great little pistol big flash & bang . Did a little whistle pig hunting back in the early 1970's .Some IHMSA Silhouette shooters use them .The BUCK ROGERS SPACE GUN in it's day.

Got one, in original trim. Recoil is not much, after all, its a 55gr (or less) bullet. Rem Model 600 action (sort of, mostly) in an...interesting pistol grip. Sweet trigger on mine, more accurate than I am, too.

Remington developed the .221 Fireball, to shoot from the 10" barrel of the XP-100s. A regular .222Rem would have worked just as well, but can't burn all the powder the case has room for in a 10". SO Rem shorted the case body a bit, and made it more...efficient. Also made sure only Rem ammo would fit.;)

Nice gun for potting varmints at up to a few hundred yards (if you're good enough) without having to lug around a heavy varmint rifle.

Tough to get tight groups from the bench, mostly because of rushing. Space the shots out so the light barrel doesn't heat up, and it will probably surprise you.

Weell, I don'y have the XP-100 but I got

a 10" octagon barrel for my Contender!
Can't wait to get to the range with it!
Sound like it's going to be a HOOT!

Like many of the small bore bottle necked rifle calibers it produces a lot of flash when fired out of pistol length barrels. Seems some of the powder ain't done burning yet and flashes in front of the muzzle creating quite a boom. A friend of mine calls my Contender in .222 remington "Das Earsshplittinloudenboomen". Recoil from most is quite mild.

Have a few contender barrels in 222. 223,.The 10 in gives the loudest blast .Keltec's su 16 plr is just a loud.

all things considered, they are a pleasure to shoot. I don't remember it being so loud, maybe I ran really light loads. I have a 2X pistol scope on mine, and I was always absolutely astonished with my performance off of the bench.

That skinny barrel and vent rib with enormous sight was just plain stupid. The one thing that I'd do to mine if I could would be to rebarrel it with a non tapered 3/4" in the same length. I already have wood on it, so it won't be difficult.

Mine was chambered in 7mm BR with a longer barrel - it was very accurate and the recoil using the original stock was minimal.

Check to make sure brass is available

Brass is available but they are proud of it ($50+ per 100) Fairly easy to make from 223 brass and it's as cheap as bending over. Flash depends alot on what powder you're using. Load up some BLC2 and you'll light up the sky.:D
Actually now that I think of it, you may be able to make brass from the 300 blackout that all the tactical guys are playing with. reverse engineering at it's finest.
