Remington 1903 with 4-Groove Barrel Value

I'm trying to find out where I can get an idea of what a rifle is worth. I'm getting ready to sell a Remington 1903 with a 4-groove barrel and am not sure where to research. I paid a premium from the collector then and think it's a good example.

I bought it from a collector many years ago. The serial number is over 3 million and it has the Rockwell test marks. The barrel has a flaming bomb on it and it stamped 7-42 (I think). It is in excellent condition. The bore looks good. I don't know how to gauge or determine what the muzzle erosion (?) might be, but a .30-06 military ball bullet doesn't sink all the way in, so it must be pretty good. The wood is dark, but the integrity is good, with no chips or cracks.

I know pictures would help - I just haven't gotten to that yet. Probably tomorrow or the next day.

Any thoughts or a place to find out?

Assuming its in the condition you described (I have no reason to believe it isnt), I'm guessing 500-700. Depending on the location.

The CMP just released a bunch of M1903s and the price was about $500 and less.

To test the bore with a bullet, as you mentioned, you need M2 ball. 147 grn.

Stick it in the muzzle, measure the distance from the muzzle to the case neck. Should be 1/2 inch. If it goes all the way, its shot, If it's 1/8 inch from the muzzle, you have 25% of the barrel left, 1/4 = 50%, 1/8 = 75%.

To get a better ideal you can go to the CMP web site and check with these guys.

I wouldn't use the CMP price as much of an indicator. For that price those guns sold out in days. People who were sending in apps overnight air to buy rifles that had pretty bad written descriptions sight unseen. The pics of the ones I've seen on that forum look good, and the CMP tends to make things sound worse than they are, but no one knew that when they were buying.

I don't $500-$700 is too far off, but if you do a sold search on gunbroker you'll see plenty go for $700-$900.

I don't see many 1903's for sale for $500 around here. They would be in poor condition for that price.

Here are some that sold and didn't off this board:
