remington 1858 web on loading lever...?

I've taken some off the spine so I could pull the center pin without dropping the lever. Never tried to take any off the web.

Yep, I removed some of my R-1858's loading lever…

Actually, the barrel lug detached itself from my Pietta, so I made up a spring latch and removed the loading gear. Now, I load with a custom cylinder press.

Yup, Remington did:eek:
If you look at some of the differing variations available some have a distinct "cut" in the profile of the web. AFAIK this was because they copied differing versions of the original. There were 3 versions made & 2 of them had the "dogleg" look to the web instead of the triangular shape it got later.

Now this means Remington actually added to the original, but I don't know why the change was needed.

Perhaps they found the dogleg unnecessary and the triangular shape was adopted as a labor saving "improvement"

Could it be?

Is it possible that the triangle is stronger than the dogleg? Repeated and prolonged use might distort a lever that is not quite strong enough. Doesn't mean it had to happen, only that someone associated with the design thought it might.
