Remington 1187 users please respond

Well in every gun things break...it's a machine, and machines need to be maintained.
The only problem I've ever seen in a 1187 was repeated FTF which was due to extreme neglect, it was never cleaned for like 2000 rounds. Then after a good cleaning it was back to 100%. It's a good gun.
In my opinion I would stick with the 870 for HD, if you want to compared the reliability between an 870 to an 1187, no contest, 870 wins hands down.

I haven't heard any bad stuff about 1187s. The 1100 had a rep with the trap/skeet crowd.

I have owned 2. I do not own one anymore. I would not use one for HD, period. It is not reliable enough, and parts do break. I had a rat-tail break, the action bar guide break, and numerous jams even when clean. I do not like the 11-87. I have an 1100 from the early 70's that is dead reliable, but I also have had parts breakages with it over the years.
I put over 5000 rounds through each of the 11-87's before I gave up on them, the 1100 has just over that, and one breakage.
If you talk to the serious competitive 1100 or 11-87 shooter they ALL carry some spare parts, enough to enable them to finish anyway. Not a terrible gun for the money, but no way I would stake my life on one.

I've never had a problem with my 11-87 premier....been hunting everything from Texas Ducks and Geese to South Dakota Pheasant and never so much as a hiccup in the 10 years (?) or so that I've had it.
I would agree that for a home defense weapon the reliability of a pump would be my preference.

I've had an 11-87 SC for somewhere in the neighborhood of six years and haven't had a single failure or breakage (although I do carry a few spare parts - namely extra barrel seals). I echo the sentiment of not using it for HD, but can't say as I've had any reliability problems.
As far as the Browning goes, in speaking to some high-end Sporting Clays shooters they have seen a ton of problems with the Browning Gold series of semis.
You may want to take a look at a Benelli...excellent reliability and durability. I belive the US Marines recently adopted a Benelli as their combat shotgun.

Any auto shot enough will break. It is, after all, a machine. Parts wear out. No one brand is better then another. Beretta's are the darling of competition shooters but you'll see enough of the other brands to know they're not dead.
Remington's have gotten a bad rap over the last few years. Why this is I don't know. Have owned 1100/11-87's for the last 35 years and have never had any major problems. About the only thing the newer designs have over the Rems. is the ability to shoot very light loads plus 3" mags. This makes them somewhat more versatile but not better. A Beretta auto is just a stamped piece of metal just like a Remington. Pick one that fits and go from there. They'll all give good service if properly maintained.

Early 11-87s had some probs which were corrected, TTBOMK. Since they were measured against the reliable old 1100, they got a rep they never deserved.
The newer ones are quite reliable and sturdy, I'm told. Even the old ones hold up if certain small parts are replaced regularly. According to Kuhnhausen, these include the buffer and springs..
However, NO shotgun out there beats the 870 for durability and reliability. None....

i'm going to keep my 870 for HD. i'm kinda ashamed i even thought of selling it to buy an 1187.
i'm buying an 1100 for my bird gun. i've never shot '3 and i probably never will so i'm passing on the 1187 and taking the cheaper 1100. i also found some good reviews of the 1100 in the archives, didn't know it was so popular, cheap and such a good rep.

1100s are excellent autoloaders,Eap. I wouldn't term them cheap, but they're a lot of gun for the money.
A while back, Walmart had a sale on what you might call an 1100 Express. Lots of folks here got them for as little at $300 or so and sing Hosannas about them.
Bruce Buck, AKA the Technoid, has some stuff over on Shotgun Report about keeping a high use 1100 alive and well.
As for shame, we all do things we regret later. Your close call here with your 870 pales into insignificance next to some of my gaffes. Since there's no Statute of Limitations on being an idiot, I claim my rights and will remain silent on those(G)...
