Remington 11-48 questions

Hello, new guy here and my first shotgun (at my old age)

Just picked up a Remington. The model number on the reciever is 11-48 but the barrel is only 18". There is no date code on the barrel but the S/N's match. It is a semi in 16 gauge.

I cannot find any info as to what this really is. Is it a riot gun?

Also, can somebody inform me as to the mfg date?

The S/N is 5543322.

Many thanks in advance and thanks for this forum.

I've never run across a Remington w/o a barrel date code - but if you call the Remington Service Dept with the SN, they should be able to tell you the DOM.

AFAIK, the shortest available factory bbl was the 20" riot bbl, so I would presume that one's been shortened by a previous owner or his gunsmith.

Many thanks for the info. I will give them a call and let you know what I find out. I also thought it was strange with no date on it, just some symbols.

Thanks again....

1-800-243-9700, Remphone.Work down the phone tree until you reach a real person.

I suspect Bubba and his Unholy Hacksaw from Hell have done atrocities to your barrel. The 11-48, being a recoil action, requires a certain amount of mass to make things work. My guess, Bubba realized he'd messed up big time right after shot 1 and traded it off.

Your choices are....

Trade it off to someone you dislike.

Get a new barrel from Numrich, etc, and move on. The 11-48 has lots of happy owners.

Or, get a qualified smith to install a Deluxe Polychoke and rib. This MAY add enough weight, though you may have to play with the rings and springs.

HTH....

Thanks for all the help. Called Remington and the mfg. date was 1954.

Also, I had measured the barrel wrong (told ya'all I was new to shotguns).
The actual length is 18 7/8". Overall length is 38".

The Rem rep. said it was a 16 guage Riot.

Once again, thanks for the help and I will check into buying a longer barrel for some hunting.

Rgds
