Remington 552 Forend Shake

I found a couple of threads regarding this issue. One person suggested using inner tube rubber to shim/support where the forend contacts the barrel. My thought is it might retain moisture and that I should just go ahead and order the part. The reason I'm asking is because the forend on my 60's era 552 rattles slightly. When I bought the gun last week I completely disassembled the gun but couldn't pull the magazine tube out to be able to take off the forend, but I'm assuming it's missing the shim because of the shake. Is this common in 552's? Thanks
