Remignton 1100 and 1187

What are the differences between a Remington 1100 and 1187. Which is better and why? Does either use the same barrels as an 870?

The 1100 precedes the 11-87. The primary difference is the gas compensating system in the 11-87 which allows for heavier shells. The 1100 doesn't have this system which is way the 1100 is more of a target gun while the 11-87 is considered more of a hunting gun.

Many 11-87s won't function on lighter loads. The exception being those 11-87s that were marketed as target guns in the 90's. But they didn't have the gas compensating system and the factory warned against firing shells heavier than 1-1/4 ounce, 3-1/4 dram. These guns were simply 1100s with a different name.

Which is better depends on what you intend to do. 1100 for targets and upland; 11-87 for waterfowl and long range upland.

The 870 barrels will not fit either the 11-87 or the 1100.

No expert on either, but I do know the bbls are not interchangeable.Since the aftermarket folks carry them separately in the catalogs, they're not interchangeable with each other, either.

Lots of folks that do lots of shooting with one or two loads like the trap folks use the 1100. The 11-87 is easier to switch loads on. IMO.

Early 11-87s were plagued with a number of glitches, now seemingly rectified. The 1100 just keeps on going like that little pink drum beating rabbit...

Humm. I have an 11-87 SPS 28" and I wish I could tell you how many jams I had, but I can't. Never had one. Ever! And it is used for hunting ducks with heavy loads and skeet and trap with light loads. I have never used less than 100 shells in a clay outing so the gun has lots of opertunity to get fouled up. It just keeps on running.
